I was speaking with a fellow golfer who asked me what i did after a round. i replied saying that sometimes a drink and a chat, a break for sandwich after nine. it depended on what time i had left. sometimes i just enjoy a round and go home. He said no wonder clubs are struggling if all golfers were like me. i should support the club by spending extra . i told the person to get a life. Surely a green fee is still as important?

The choice is yours, clubs know how much revenue they reckon to take each year from all sources and buget accordingly. You will be asked by a member club if you intend to use the facilities as they generally dont like "car park" members but ultimately they still get your membership/green fee which is the important thing.

yea,and I Bet hes one of the guys who takes his own flask and sandwiches.yer pays your money and you have the choice.
the reason why clubs are struggling is because they wont
bend a little, thats why Im not a member of a club,

You should have swung yr driver between his bo***cks to shut him up.

Not everyone can afford to stay behind spending every last penny behind the bar. It's the choice of the individual and no-one else.

Spending extra on what? Drink? Then drive. What does this chap suggest.. It's great these people who say do this or that. What’s his solution. The compulsory bar bill.. As you might guess I hate them. Not everyone wants to sit around after golf listening to a load of boring mumblings about this shot or that putt…. I’m a member of my club as it is the only decent course within a reasonable distance…. I play a lot of golf and get very good value for my fees. I don’t give a toss about the clubhouse or it’s facilities. The food is appalling and the committee know that but do nothing, as the staff are so good in every other way…If a club requires more revenue PUT THE FEES UP. By the way Brookie maybe your not a member of a club because you a tight wadded troglodyte. That’s certainly what you sound like… Enjoy your golf everyone.
You keep doing your own thing lefty. As you say you pay your fees.

No shame not hanging around the clubhouse... it depends on the clubhouse and atmosphere created. Mine is usually closed by the time i get off the course - their loss not mine.

depends on the day whether i have time to go lounge about in the bar.
family commitments make it impossible to spend 5 or 6 hours at the course all the time so i dont see anything wrong with changing shoes in car park

If i play well then i have taken a few pound off the guys i am playing with so therefore i will go into the club for a pint, but if i play bad i jump in the car head home wishing i had took up some other sport lol.

all joking a side i think it depends for me on what time i have to spend etc.. Our club we can use our GUI cards for a 10% discount at the bar and also when you pay your membership they add £25 extra onto it so that people feel they have to come into the bar to at least use up the £25. It seems to work well as much weekend there not alot of seating left anytime we would go in.. Also they do a awesome sunday buffet were you pack as much food on the plate as you can carry for 7 quid.

There is no doubt that 80% of the revenue in the clubhouse comes from 20% of the membership.

Now lets agree first that we are all different and have our own agendas, dictated by money/time/inclination.

We do need a clubhouse or we could change in the car park - do need a coffee/bacon roll or carry a nosebag - do need a pint or p**s off home - do need to relax in good company or enjoy ones own reflection in the car mirror - do need a shower and freshen up or stay smelly.

I work hard at keeping revenue going through my club as I am aware of the current financial climate and do not wish to lumber members with higher fees. I do not see my fellow golfers who come in after playing, drinking to excess and driving - obviously Justagolfer sees everyone who drives to a pub as drinking to excess and driving, perhaps he should join some of us in the club and see that we CAN exercise commonsense.
Talking of commonsense, much of the discussions in the clubhouse revolve round matters of the day as some of us leave our golf behind when we hand in our score cards. Maybe the current financial/news items/current jokes do not interest you.

Matt B, I don't see my members spending every penny behind the bar as, from the above statement, we all tend to drive home. If you cannot exercise financial self control in a bar please give credit to the one's who can.

I do think a small voucher system is excellent as it means the tight wads do have to pay towards the clubhouse revenue and if they do not use it - they lose it!

A lot of clubs have the "voucher" system or money paid into an account to be used during the year.
Personally, I don't like the idea. I want to decide when I'll spend my money.

If I'm playing solo then I probably don't go in after as I almost always have to get to work. But if I'm out with Fragger or CVG then we almost always go in, even if its only for a drink and a sandwich.

My girlfriends golf club had £50 put onto a card at the beginning of the season and then she could top up and get a 10% discount at the bar

The club went under and everyone lost their credit.some people lost a few hundred pounds as comp money was put onto that as well.

I have been in our clubhouse once in the last year. Only then because it's where we had to go to pay our membership.
Each to their own I say. I have no interest in hanging around after a round, but I know others would'nt dream of leaving without a pint.
I'm dead against any sort of bar levy. I know I will never use the facilities. I do my bit for the club by paying my membership and entry fees into every medal / stableford comp.

Is there a problem with the clubhouse that you wont go in? perhaps a letter to the club stating why?
I sometimes go in for a pint and a meal, other days its a cup of coffee. The way I see it, every quid I put into the club, I get back in the course condition improving year after year, a clean coat of paint or maybe even just new carpet. It all helps.

I'm guessing you dont know many people at the club and play on your own a lot?!?

Just a guess......

If the club went under then surely the course was closed and people lost their memberships as well?!?!?

I'd be more pi**ed off about that then losing the £50 I had on a bar tab.

Well that was not the case, the membership fee's could be claimed back from the previous owner although the club closed in March with fees due in April so they got a months subs back. But the bar card was under some unsecured loan thing so it could not be claimed back also the captains charity bottle could not be claimed back

Gobshite owner just used the club as a toy and when he was bored just dropped it
