as you may know i recently joined a new club and i dont currently have a handicap, so i need to play 3 rounds with member to get my card signed..

So far i have played 1 round yet since then i have been going up every other day to try to get the next 2 cards in. Every time i have been up i have asked several people to which they have said things like "there is 4 of us" which is fair enough.

i go up today determined to get out with someone, so i stand there on the putting green for about 45 min before i see a 2 ball on the tee. I go up to them and ask if i can join on as one of them had a members badge. They turn round and say "oh we aint sure whether we are playing the full 18 and you will have to play off the white tees".

Im starting to get Pee`d off about it as when i joined there i was told how easy it is to just turn up and 9 times outta 10 you get a game with someone!!!

Grrr... Rant Over!!

I had a very similar experience , nice club nice people etc. but just so difficult to get out with members that could sign my card . Most times i was offered to join somebody it would turn out they are not a member or corporate member or not playing the full 18. Even booked 6 lessons with the pro , which i needed , but thought he may be inclined to help me get my card . In the end i called it a day and have gone back to my old mates and the pay and play , now i'm enjoying my golf again .

yeah, the people i have spoken to have seemed friendly enough but its just so hard to get a game. Im going to the club hoping to get out and end up spending over an hour on the putting green waiting and then going home without a game.

Dont see the point in just going out on my own as i need to get another 2 cards in!! I have my name down for a comp for a week saturday so really need the 2 cards done before then!!

Isnt there a Club noticeboard or anything where you can put a note up with your phone number asking for memebers to have a round with you?

Or rather than hanging around the putiing green, cant you ask the pro to get you fixed up with someone?

Howdy

My mate Gavin also had problems when he joined and became fed up heading out by himself. Solution = he started his own non-profit website to arrange golf with members of his club and other clubs in the area.

Try http://www.fancyagameofgolf.com/ and see if there are others in you neck of the woods who might have signed up! Worth a shot.

I had the same problem at my previous club took me and my playing partner 9 months to get 3 cards in, bad value on the fees.

I spent 2 years at this club and me and my mate never managed to get involved with a group. I put this down to the club having a poor social side. (Not totally the clubs fault)

But eariler this year I have moved on my own to Oxley Park Wolverhampton and must say I could not have been made more welcome.

I would suggest having a word with the Pro there is probabley other people like you struggling to get a game.

Same here. I struggle to put three cards together. Then the time I shot a 75 with a 18.7 hc I was called a bandit. I had told you to come and sign my cards buddies...

lol... yeah my first card was awful 104 yet since then i have been shooting high 80`s!!

Im going to go down first thing in the mornings maybe thats the best time to get a game?!!

Hi Bigfoot,

Joined our club last year and had no idea what was involved in getting cards handicap etc. Ended up playing on my own alot, but started seeing the same faces playing on there own also. I now play in a group of 5 people who had the same problem, ie new to the club/area and wanted to get handicaps.

2 weeks might be a push, but in my opinion if you don't find someone on the greens then head out on your own as playing on your own you will meet lots of groups on tee boxes/playing through.

Let them know you are new and trying to get your cards, ask for their numbers or if they play a regular weekly slot if you can tag along.

Never met anyone at the putting green, met all our group whilst out on the course.

good luck

yeah i see what your saying but at my club the putting green is right next to the first tee!!! Everyone walks past the putting green to get to the tee, so as people were walking past i was asking them if i could join!!

Have you asked your pro to help ? They know the regulars, how big a group they go out in and their reputation as pleasant company or prat.
When I joined my club, the pro sorted me out with groups for the weekend comps and his judgement on their characters was bang on.

Speak to the social convenor and def the match secretary, they will know who is receptive and who are the cliques.
Local club to me started a buddy system for new members, works 100%, you either play with them or they introduce you to other members and it snowballs from there, persevere, it's a bit lonely at the start but it's still enjoyable playing with yourself- no jokes please :o

It sucks some of the situations told here and clubs wonder why they struggle to hold on to some members?

I agree the Pro could be a bit more helpful in advising who maybe worth trying to catch for a game but first and foremost the handicap secretary should be proactive and have a list on the noticeboard for either those needing a game or for members who are willing to accompany new members.

That is probably one of the best things about our place for those who join. You could not know a soul up there but you will get at least 2 games a week out of the place in competition or the draw will factor in those requiring to play for handicap.

didnt think about a notice on the board, thats quite a good idea.

I went into the shop and had a word and they just said to hang around and ask people as they walk down.

This should never happen at a golf club!

And they wonder why membership numbers are down??

When I joined my club I was told to turn up at 8;30 on Saturday and the Comp Sec met me and sent me out with a 3 Ball and one of them was asked to mark my card.

He then booked me into the next two comps to make sure I got my cards in quick.

From that I just signed up for competitions on the board (do they not do them?)

my best mate was captain last year - he spent the whole year picking up waifs and strays ("new members") as we played our way round and he always brought them into groups. To my mind he did a brilliant job as captain, purely for doing that all year round
