Is a mistake on a card an automatic DQ?

One of my PPs made a mistake with his score on a particular hole. He was declared winner of the comp, however when he saw the email and realised his score was wrong, he contacted the club. The error was rectified and his revised score saw him declared as 2nd. His handicap was also cut accordingly.

Credit to him for speaking up about the error, but I had thought a scoring error was an automatic DQ?

Depends what the error was.

I think he put down his net score rather than his gross score on a hole, and ended up 2 shots better than he should have.

The player is responsible for recording the correct gross score (but not the stableford points)

(3) Wrong Score for a Hole. If the player returns a scorecard with a wrong score for any hole:
• Returned Score Higher Than Actual Score. The higher returned score for the hole stands.
• Returned Score Lower Than Actual Score or No Score Returned. The player is disqualified.

Very surprised that the comp organiser did not know this fairly basic rule.

I would add that even with a DQ in this circumstance the card would still be used for handicap purposes but with the score adjusted.

It's DQ, one of the most fundamental rules to be honest.

But when you say "he wrote"?
Didn't his marker write the card?

Your example is correct.

Physical scorecard. Not seen a photo of it but the secretary confirmed the error was on the card.

Forgetting to sign it before return is an automatic DQ all the way, probably the least ambiguous breach of the card return rules.

As Jim8flog posted, entering (gross) score lower than actual (even if explained as Gross v Stableford glitch) is auto DQ, as is forgetting to sign (as I've realised milliseconds after putting card in box once).
I don't see any 'Covid19' allowance for this unfortunate blunder!

You could say that you didn't sign because someone coughed on the card before you had a chance to sign.

At ours, we mark one of our fellow competitors cards and sign it, we are told that if our scoring doesnt match our fc's card then both are dq'd

At our place, one player marks a joint card for the entire group and signs it after verifying scores with each player. Each player is asked to get a photo of the card and enter thrown score on the IG website or app.
