I have stopped smoking this week and the cash I save will be put in a pot (not the drug) and saved for a posh set of irons. I play off 20 and really I am still classed as a beginner but I want a good set to see me through a few years and be able to help me lower my handicap. I was just thinking of going to AG and trying them but I have heard bad things from some posters on here?

I will keep you posted on the no smoking front.

I think that Di7's at £239 in AG is a great bargain. If you have an AG near you that also has a range, go and ask for a trial, the guys will let you hit 'real' shots instead of hitting into a curtain.

Try AG, even though they are slightly more expensive than Direct Golf, AG don't charge £3 a club for custom fitting (sorry just CHANGING the lie angle of the club)and if you buy a wood you have to pay £9.99 for a headcover for a extra years warranty!!

Excellent attitude. You "have" stopped smoking - not "am giving up" and with a goal in mind like new clubs you will easily succeed.

The myth that it's difficult to give up is perpetuated by the tobacco manufacturers as they don't want to lose you as a customer.

Wouldn't go near AG for reasons I can go into if you would like me to.

My Cobra FP's are fantastic and value at £299, my pro couldn't believe how good they were when he hit mine.

Best advice is to try a few and see what you like.

Callaway x18s are good, Ping G10, or maybe mizuno mx 19s

Congrats on giving up the fags

In my book for a game improvement club that incorporates the latest technology, will help your game and give you longevity I recommed the X20's.

As regular forum readers will know I have had a very good custome fitting experience via AG recently so I can't speak highly enough but it is sooooooooooooooo important to try before you buy, ideally on a range but certainly on a launch monitor so you can get some immediate feedback on how you are hitting the clubs.

If you are not keen on AG why not take a drive around some local courses and see what deals the club pros will come up with. They may not be able to offer the extensive custom fitting package but they normally let you go on the practice ground. Some have even been known to give swing tips as you try them out.

Whatever you decide take your time to make sure they are exactly right for you. We don't want you getting stressed after a few bad shots and reaching for a pack of fags

What i do recommend is that you get fitted on a range. Launch monitors can only tell you so much, they basically take a few calculations then bish bash bosh, theyre better than nothing but you cant beat seeing the ball flight with your own eyes!!!!!

Also what might be the best fitted club for you might feel awkward at first, but like anything you gotter practice with it! Custom fit clubs will do you the world of good in the end!

Well done for quitting, you've done it the right way by giving up for your reasons - no amount of nagging will work. I quit cold 20 years ago now from 100 a day at its peak (I could get duty frees) - it was that or keep taking the dog for a walk - now I can't stand them! All the bad vibes were over in about a month, so take heart.

Thanks everyone for the encouragement.

I have a few months of hard saving for the clubs but I have an AG just down the road so will try them and buy online ;-)
