We came across something ive never seen before at any "Open" even though I expect its nothing new.

At Burnham and Berrows comp we had the opportunity to take on the Pro shop.

You could pay anything up to £50 and if you hit the green you would double your money for vouchers in the pro-shop.

If you missed the green you still got a voucher for the amount you chose.

137 yards to the flag with a club wind behind so a pitching wedge for me and Phil and we both bid £20 and both hit the green so £40 to spend in pro-shop.

Gaz bid £20 also hit the green but it rolled off the back but still had his £20 to spend in shop.

Any one come across this or something even better.

Surely this was a win win although I needed persuading.

If there was stuff in the shop you want and the prices were ok then seems like a no brainer, fun way for the pro to get some business in the shop too (albeit gonna be costly if lots of good players)

Saw this last year on the forum trip up to Castle Stuart. It was £10 only though, and the stake went to charity. If you hit the green , you got a £20 voucher for the pro shop. None of us gambled as everything in the pro shop there was ££££ and it was a good 5i (so about 180-190 yards awat. I did manage to sneak one onto the front of the green though ....then 3 wiggled :)

They do something like this at my club on captains day - it was nearest the pin vs the pro.
Same deal, gamble as much as you like, beat the pro he doubles it in vouchers, lose and you get the original amount in vouchers anyway.
150 yard downhill par 3. I "gambled" £50 and won, so i had £100 to spend.

He also ran on the same hole a charity comp where you entered for a 5er and hitting the green won you a sleeve of balls.

Seen similar on a Charity day. 170yd par three on a very windy day. £5 entry, £10 back if you hit the green and are cat 1 or 2 player, £15 back if you're a cat 3 or 4 player. All profits went to the charity. Almost everyone entered as it was for charity and I didn't see anyone hit the green! Combination of wind and gambling nerves. I suspect they made a mint for charity!

The trouble was we never new what the format was until we got to the 5th even though I was told it was a beat the pro comp on that hole.

When I went into the pro shop after I bought a pair of GG waterproof trousers.
I have been looking at them lately and was looking on ebay for a good pair.

They were priced at £189 and I told the pro I could get them cheaper and was looking for a deal.
So I offered him £129 plus the £40 voucher I won so got them for £169 of course in effect I payed £149 as I had gambled £20.
Either way he got some business.

If I had known beforehand he had the trousers in and I was going to buy them anyhow I could have gambled the £50.

We have it on our ~180yd par 3 8th on Professionals Day. Max £20 though.

I still don't know why I hit 9 iron after you both hit the green with a wedge.

Interesting concept.

You don't lose out - except you may not have been planning to spend any money. And the Pro gets some guaranteed trade. All hinges on whether the trade he gets covers the value of the 50% discount he give to the winners? And of course, some will use the spend/winnings as a "deposit" on a bigger spend - like pokerjoke describes.

Our "hit the green" challenge is based on odds relating to handicap. You stake what you like - and at 18 h/c I get a 7 to 1 payout. All takings go to cherridee. Given that it is on the first, 230 yds downhill to a sloping green - usually into the wind - not many win, and the charity always makes a profit

We did something similar on Captains Day last week on our 178 yard 6th. £5 and you get double the money if you hit and stay on the green. Most that hit it chose to donate the full amount to the nominated challenge. Interesting to do it on a commercial basis but if they are getting it in pro shop vouchers, a captive audience and so I can see the sense

Knowing those two they probably didn't tell you even though they were in the same team.

Shocking accusation :D

We won't talk about the worst two putts i have ever made after the tee shot though !! :(

It was win win for me as I was already looking to spend some money in the pro shop so managed to get 40 quid worth of stuff for 20
Quid

Was someone on the green to verify it, could be open to abuse otherwise, especially in Opens with visiting players!

I seem to remember landing and staying on the green at Blackmoor for a sleeve of Prov's in my first H4H's GM meet, long par 3 into the wind but managed to stay on the saucer green with a high 4w.

Great concept, will run it by our Pro on Saturday.

At my previous club we had this on one of the main opens each year. A couple of the assistant pros would take turns to do a stint and sit by the tee to act as 'verification'. Think there was a max stake of £20.
It is a really good idea if there is something you want from the Pro Shop of course.

They had this on our Professional's Day earlier in the month, max £20, on our 3rd hole (160 yards).

One of the junior members was sat near the green to verify it. Needless to say missed the green by miles, and then hit the green on our 210 yard par 3 later in the round!

Our pro does this once a year with a max of £100 - which I have gambled the full amount and won each time for the last few years.
We have around 180 people playing the comp and the majority take part in this, so it's guaranteed a large sum of money will be going into his till and it keeps the stock turning over in the pro shop.

We used to have this exact same thing on captains day at my old club, no brainer if there's something you're already looking at in the pro shop. I did £50, hit the green, and had 100 to spend... he probably still has it as I left the club
