Morning! Firstly I'd like to thank those who put my mind at rest about the message I posted last week about joining a club. I did it on Sunday and went for my first round last night. Played the front nine of one of the courses and carded a 51 which I was chuffed with seeing as I hadn't played the course before. I thought it would have been a lot worse. I will get better I hope.

Anyway the reason for this post is that it quickly became apparent that I'll be spending some time in the trees with tricky lies etc. I remember reading somewhere a while back that people carried a wrong-sided club in their bags for instances of bad lies. I'm right-handed so was thinking of going to buy a left-handed short iron, from a cheapo sports shop, for those lies that cannot be played right-handed. I know I'll need to work on it and sometimes it may be better taking a drop than playing left-handed but would I be infringing any rules if I ever play in competitions? I don't think I'll exceed the max amount of clubs in the bag (is it 14?) but can I choose to play a shot any way I want?

I wouldn't bother with a left handed club. I'd concentrate more on trying to stay out of the trees. Maybe a lesson is required so that you've got the basics nailed (stance, grip, etc).

Also, you must remember that the only way to guarantee a nice lie is to keep the ball on the fairway. If you hit the ball into the trees then you're going to get penalised. Much the same as a bunker.

My course is full of trees so on any given round I'm going to end up next to one, behind one, etc. I simply have to take my medicine and chop out which ever way I can.

Oh, you can swing the club which ever way you want, left or right handed, there's no rule against that. Left handed players are wierd though.....

I am the same as Auburn, with a course full of trees. He's absolutely correct IMO you will soon learn to get out of trouble using one of your clubs from bad lies, last week I had to chop out sideways back handed from the trees, luckily hit a lifetime best draw to land 6ft from the pin and made par! Use the money saved on the club for an MOT lesson from your Pro!

I knocked out from the trees only yesterday with the back of a 7i.

Unless you are truly amidextrous, you are only ever going to be able to knock 15 yards odd left handed. Why would you need a special club for this?

I'd give my right arm to be ambidexterous!!

Ambidexterous - I don't know about that but I know I can use both hands..... ;)

Are you allowed to strike the ball with the back of a club? I thought you had to reverse the club head

Pretty sure this ruling changed a while ago. Not got a rule book with me. Any one?
