Imagine the BBC doing this?

I can guarantee if BBC showed almost 300 hours of content (which is likely to be endless repeats of about 10 hours of content) then the threads would be created that says why do we pay our license fee for this, etc etc. I'm sure you'll get the chance to watch the highlights of last match endlessly, the same interviews with the same people, and probably a couple of hours a night of discussion type coverage, but let's be honest, they haven't created anything, just stopped all other sport from appearing on #4 for a couple of weeks.

I was in the US this year and was watching The Golf Channel in the week building up to the Masters. And boy did they drag it out, about 8 hours of content stretched out over 5 days. I felt at times you can have too much of a good thing.

Also for those of us with a family it's hard enough trying to get 3 complete days in front of the TV to watch The Ryder Cup, without asking if you can watch several days of warm up as well. I can just imagine how well that will go down.;)

BBC is not free. We all MUST pay for a TV license. At least with SKY you have the choice to pay for it or not.

Indeed you do and what fantastic value you get for it. You and I may have exactly the same car - you may drive 100x the mileage I do. We pay the same road tax. I do not whinge that I do not use the roads as much as you do. Because we have to accept that in our British society there are some things that we all contribute to for the common good. And the BBC is one of them.

Out of interest, does Sky Sports 4 appear in every Sky package. I have ditched Sky so do not know. I always thought that the Ryder Cup was a premium event that would appear on Sky Sports 1 or 2. Do all Sky Sports subscribers get all Sky Sports channels or do you pick and choose? Will some people expecting to see it on Sky Sports 1 or 2 have to pay more for the 'new' channel.

You will need the full Sports package. The only way I will get to see it live is via the NowTV app on my PS3. £10 a day. I might get the final day.

To be honest I'd pay double my license fee if they wanted for the lack of adverts and (relatively) unbiased coverage of news stories. And that's before you factor in BBC4. As every other media outlet is there to make money and/or has an angle on the news. Usually both.

For the common good? Really. I don't dislike what the BBC produce, I just dislike being told what I have to buy.

Would I happily pay my fee if I had an option, yes i would.

But like Sky, its not free.

I agree wholeheartedly. I've got Sky Sports but the frequency of the ad breaks is a pain. And as for BBC4 - absolutely brilliant TV channel (not to be associated in any way, shape or form with BBC3)

But nowhere near as expensive.

Yes - there is an aspect of what makes this country work that depends upon the recognition that in some things all should contribute in equal measure for the common good. And the BBC is one of them. Allow pick and mix and the BBC would fall apart. I only very, very rarely watch BBC3 - but I don't suggest for a moment that I should be able to opt out of it and pay a lesser licence fee.

Or the BBC could try and modernise and improve their coverage? Instead of putting the last big golf event on terrestrial TV on to pay TV, therefore massively reducing the viewing figures and reducing even further the chances of youngsters seeing the game and getting inspired to play it?

Nah I have enough folk holding up play on my course last thing I want is more people getting inspired.........joke

In an ideal world all the great sport sky have would be on terrestrial tv and save me the subscription money. I have got used to a standard I enjoy on sky and frankly don't think the bbc came close.

The chances of them modernising is about as likely as me playing in the open, it's been the same for decades........hopefully it happens though, starting with the removal of Aliss would be a good sign of intent.

In what respect are Sky's so called experts any more knowledgeable than those employed by the BBC. Ken Brown and Mark James speak from greater experience than Mark Roe or Robert Lee.

I am sad to have to agree that now would be a good time for Peter Alliss to"hang up the mic" and Ewen Murray does an excellent job on Sky but that aside I cannot see any evidence to support the claim that Sky's coverage is appreciably better.

Mind you with their financial advantages it ought to be. Subscriptions and endless bloody adverts!

For a start they actually keep up with current golf news, as posted above not knowing Tom Watson ha an exemption for St Andrews next year was beyond a joke........I gave other examples in my original post and they had a fair few other inaccurate statements across the weekend as well. It's almost a if they are kept in a box all year and brought out for the one Open week.

add to the fact when sky does a major they have Butch all weekend and usually Jack for a day, I would say they might just be better equipped to comment than Ken Brown and Maureen Madill.

lol!

I think you may find it's quite difficult to follow a tiny white sphere while perched in a sky-high crane against an often white background in often windy conditions from 400 yards away... those who have a sky-high crane at home can try it to see just how difficult...

Glad you mentioned Butch Harmon as he is probably add more to the coverage than most.

Instead he sits on the fence, never saying anything that might be construed as criticism for fear of offending a potential client.

You appear to be particularly upset by the mistake regarding Watson's exemption and yet if one listens closely enough to any commentary on any sport over a period as long as the BBC's uninterrupted coverage of the Open you will encounter similar errors.

But then if you enjoy "experts" such as Simon Holmes, Mark Roe, Dennis Pugh, Robert Lee and, of course Monty it's best you restrict yourself to Sky's coverage of golf.

Lol not upset at all, just re-iterating the point you seemed to miss!I also thought the team covering the open might have caught one of the biggest stories in the lead up to it, simples!

i will continue to enjoy the experts and continue to have an opinion

Only 36 hours "live" golf - lots of adverts and fillers

The BBC have just done more live golf without one single advert

And the BBC can't dedicate one whole channel for a week because the BBC doesn't just cater for golf fans.

Just had the best 4 days coverage of golf on telly - it was fantastic - Sky will never match it.
yes but that is the only 4 days your getting,SKY has sport wrapped up and with sports channel 5 coming on this week it has Europe tied up as well.
i thought this years coverage wasn't that good, same old story's from ALLIS, Ken on the course is just tedious now and the way the talk down to you is childish, throw in the Scottish woman and it has become a snoozefest.

isnt sky sports free? Oh wait it is for me ;)

on a serious note I dont mind BBC or sky for golf, aslong as its not some nonsense ET open with about 15 spectators I dont care who is commentating tbh.

I enjoy sky's shot centre aswell. Definitely more up to date than the beeb offering and Mr A constantly getting names wrong.

Its still a good result for golf fans in general.
