I remember Woolworth's football boots. They had the brand name Winfield. The sole and studs were one piece of moulded white plastic. I would inherit a pair from one of two older brothers if they hadn't split.
I begged and begged for my first brand new pair for my 13th birthday. Patrick - and they were £2.85. I remember the price because it was a talking point for my mother for a whole year.

I think I remember back in 1962 petrol being 5 old shillings=2 half-crowns a gallon, = 25p a gallon now . My weekly wage then as an apprentice was £2, 10 shillings = roughly £2.25 .
fortunately I don't need new football boots :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:.
No doubt some A/S will correct my money conversions :p:p Foxy

I can play the 'Ooh! When I were a lad' game too.....

When I first started playing Hockey - back in the very very early '60s, there was no market in NZ for Football (Soccer) style boots, so square-toed Rugby boots (leather covering metal toes) were the only real option.

The owner of the company Dad worked for either owned or was on the board of a load of clothing and household goods companies or Department Stores, so we got reduced prices for our schoolwear, shoes etc. 30/- (£1-10) was the rate for Rugby boots - made from leather, though I do remember having the fully moulded plastic ones to start with.

Hockey allowed (longer) aluminium studs, but they were banned for Rugby as potentially dangerously sharp. I think the studs had to be nailed in too. Football style boots became the norm fairly soon after I started though and one of those companies made multi-stud and 'proper' football styles under license.

I remember Premium Petrol at a fixed price of 2/6 a gallon, so much cheaper (taxed less) in NZ. £UK was fixed at $2.40NZ for a long time.
NZ went Decimal on my 14th birthday, so I did notice the 'error' you planted.

To a degree, boots have always been expensive for the ‘top quality’ ones. Problem is nowadays is companies like Nike market all their crap as top quality when in fact they are plastic rubbish (Mercurial Vapor anyone?).

When I played I mainly used Puma King or Adidas Copas which were not cheap at around £100 a pair (mid 90s).

But in 1999 I saw and listed after the Valsport Era boots, blue and silver beauties and managed to put a bit of my then meagre pay aside and got a pair. At £130 they were expensive but I then had them for 10 years and think they are still in the attic. Beautiful, light and could stop a Rhino’s foot.

Top end football boots have always attracted a decent price tag. I used to wear Adidas Copa Mundial/World Cup or Puma King which must have set my Dad back a decent amount on a semi-regular basis. I remember when Italian football was shown on Channel 4 getting a pair of Lotto Stadio. Amazingly soft, with a fold over tongue ala Puma King’s. I left them in an away changies. Surprisingly, they weren’t there when we went back later on. Gutted.

Good boots are expensive. It’s always been the case. That said. Football as a grassroots sport is relatively cheap.

If people consider football boots expensive, don’t let your kids get in to ice hockey, or high level figure skating and gymnastics. Horses would probably have been cheaper!

Then you have a doppleganger
But the ointment is helping. Actually I did. I remember when I played Union for Runcorn and was accused off playing League at the same time (ah those where the days). It wasn't me but somebody who looked like me. I've got a photo of when we played on Fairfield pitch, I think between Christmas and New Year.
