I have been quite interested in this on the GM magazine and on this forum, seems to be a hot topic with regards to time taken. What I dont get - is what do people genuinely think is an acceptable time for a 3 ball or 4 ball. For me a competition isnt going to be anythng less than 4hrs and thats OK with me. For a bounce game 3 ball or 4 ball that may come down to 3hrs 45 at a push

Are peoples expectations that rounds should be around 3hr max?

For me playing golf is also about enjoying the course and importantly the craic with the other boys, trying to run round the course just doesnt work and there is no need for it. Golf takes time simple as that.
 
JJF69, Totally agree its not a race,but it is annoying when the group in front is soo slooow that they are holding you up on every shot,people need educating in calling players through,dont know why but it seems a bit of a embarrassment for people when it should nt be...
 
3 ball knock about around my home course with the usual crew never takes more than 3hr 15mins.

A 4 ball knockabout no more than 3hr 30mins.

Competition 3 ball not more than 3hr 30mins and a competition 4 ball no more than 4hrs.

But.......away from home 3 ball medal anything from 3hr 30mins to 4.30mins.

The type of course,type of day and standard of golfer you play with has a huge say in timings.

I hate slow play and for that reason I have stopped going away from home for county scratch events where you get drawn with a young wanabee superstar who never craics on the way round and takes an age while shooting 78 and your out there for 9 hours for 36 holes.....not my idea of fun.

3 1/2 hrs for a club medal or stbfd is about right.

Our friendly 4balls on a Saturday are generally round in no more than 3hrs 45mins but that includes a few gimmes and pick ups etc.

I agree with these timings too. I dont like being held up too much but for those who would prefer to "run round" - go find a 10k cos I want to enjoy my round at a steady pace

GAAAAHHH!!! There's no plural to "craic" FFS!!!

Honestly this word should be banned to anyone who can't speak Gaelic! I could cheerfully cave the teeth in of any wideboy that thinks he's being clever using the word "Just enjoying the craic mate, innit?", and you know damn well they don't have the faintest idea what the word means! Most of them probably think it's spelt "crack" as well.

Utter caints!
 
one problem is that regular players of any course assume that everybody else is also familiar with it. your decisions as to club, line of shot etc are all pre-made, you know where it's not worth looking for a lost ball, hence the impatience with anyone spending ages on a forlorn hope.
play my course, especially on a Friday afternoon (why can't societies stick to mid-week as we do?) and you could be out there 5 hours. but 20 'golfers' none of whom know the course, some of whom barely know one end of a club from the other - it's gonna happen.
then again, get out first thing and 3.15 is easily doable.

So should our Golf Monthly Forum Machrihanish trip in March be banned in your opinion, should Machrihanish Dunes turn round and tell us , thank you for wanting to travel to Machrihanish and give us a rather nice winter cash injection of £1400 plus whatever you decide to spend behind the bar but since its a Saturday sling yer hook??????

Same with Machrihanish Golf Club on the Sunday, should they reject our £1260 plus bar takings?????

Golf clubs need the income.

The quicker my round takes the better i play. If i am out there for 4+ hours it just gets boring because you cant get a rhythm much rather have a quick round.

Not so much down south where membership costs are way higher, and courses tend to be stupid busy anyway.
 
If my Missus asks me "what time will you be home?" I will tend to work on these timings.
2 ball....3 hours plus a drink or two
3 ball....3 1/2 hours plus a drink or two
4 ball....4 hours plus a drink or two

Over the years this has proved to be fairly accurate and I tend to roll in about 8 hours later

Why on earth would I want to get home earlier and run the risk of walking in on them?
