Ours was 4 until a year ago when they put it up to 8. Not sure why - a lot of people who can't win moaning about it I guess.

This is something I need to clarify at my new place. The qualification criteria for Club Champs in July is to have played 8 qualifying comps by the preceding March.

Now that’s a physical impossibility for me as I’ve literally just joined and would hope there would be something in place for new members to be able to qualify.

Club Champs is usually Scratch anyway so putting cards in shouldn't be necessary..it's not at ours.
It is for handicap comps though..Just a means of ensuring your index is at least in the right postcode

It is scratch and that’s why I want to play but there’s a bite agains the criteria to have 8 counting comp rounds by March prior to the comp.

I’m happy to play every comp in the run up to it but I won’t squeeze 8 in, in the time running up to it is just not feasible. Going to email the Comp Secretary to more to ask the question. I’ve zero chance of winning in handicap comps anyway but enjoy playing them and happy to have those contribute toward it but seems bizarre that March is the cut off.

Tested the back out today , was ok , a few swings where I was coming round too much and pulled the ball but putter was ice cold and finished with 2 over for 33 points

Dunno how I’d feel about that. 36 hole comp with a cut after 18 holes, doesn’t feel like much point going out trying to shoot low and make the cut when there’s nothing to play for. Plus say I played well and managed to go lower than the winner but wasn’t allowed to win I think that would be odd for all parties concerned.

The club Champ wins knowing he didn’t shoot the lowest number and the person who did knows they should be the winner but can’t be. I’d rather not bother in those circumstances. Purely theoretical of course as that’s a long way off and a lot of golf to be played.

I reckon I can get maybe 5 comps in by the time it comes round. I’ll just have to see what they say if it’s a no go then I’ll probably just practice that weekend and be around to the club to see the buzz.

That’s what I think it should be but ours clearly states qualifying criteria and number of events. Hoping when I speak to them tomorrow it’s just a carry over btw plate they’ve used for other board comos which I can understand, but for a purely scratch event even if it is “The big one” I think it should be as yours is.

I’m sure if you searched on here this has been discussed previously and if I remember correctly it was brought in by some Clubs after the introduction of WHS and some Clubs believed there were bandits around.

Some reasons given were to stop people joining Clubs winning the main comp and moving onto others, some had brought it in to stop General Play being used to manipulate handicaps before board comps etc.

We have no restriction at our place, but there were a myriad of reasons and justifications for these limitations.

I’m just confused as to why a Scratch comp would put such a restriction on new members. Perhaps there is a caveat at the club I’ve emailed to enquire as it would be a shame to miss out especially as it being purely a scratch based comp there’s no advantage being gained with shots etc.

Either way I’m not complaining if that rule applies across the board then FairPlay I’m happy to abide by it, still attend the club that weekend for practice and be around the club when it’s on for the buzz. But if there is something in place to accommodate newer members e.g a reduced number of comps or even a specific qualifying round to enter with a committee member etc then I’ll do everything I can to get in .

I think some Clubs run a Gross & Nett Comp at the same time for Club Championship, some have a comp were top 16 go forward to Match Play to find Club Champ etc.

Sadly, imo, some Clubs see the Club Championship off scratch as just another board comp.

I know ours is 36 hole stroke play only event. In the event of ties there is no count back it’s sudden death play off. So can’t see why it would need the restriction as it would be a total level playing field. But as I’ve said I’ll see what they say and abide by whatever the decision is.
