I played today and..(Rolling) -originally created by JohnnyDee

First round of the New Year yesterday.

3 balls consigned to three different ponds over the course of the 4th and 5th holes.

Lots of random bounces in the frozen conditions, putting almost a lottery. Shot somewhere in the 90's. Wont be playing tomorrow.

Frozen so temps today. Did a v nice 6 over and 15/20 split 35 s/ford pts in the rollup - got me a joint 2nd place and a whole £2 winnings - well it covered my £1 entry. And as a result my rollup h/cap index cut to 4.4 so that’s me off 4 next time out. Ah well…nothing better than having a stretch target is there…🤔, and 4 is def a stretch for me. An excellent start to the year. Onwards and upwards - or downwards…

I really don't know what that means.

Had a fun little knock on the frozen course today! Somehow I played a blinder. Approaches had to be landed well short, but I judged some of these perfectly. Putting was a total lottery through the ice and frost, sometimes it would skip forwards, sometimes it would just stop completely, so that was hit and hope. Hit some absolute bombs with driver though. 😂

In the end with some very generous gimmes and pick and place everywhere, I managed to shoot 79 for 34 points. Had a lovely birdie on the 13th with a perfectly judged pitch, landing short of the green and skipping up to the flag. On the 9th (which was our final hole), a par 5, I managed to hit the green in two, but sadly three-whacked it through the slush. Very happy overall! Thought I'd struggle to break 90 let alone 80. Didn't even feel that cold either, after four holes I had the gilet and the snood off and stuffed back in the bag.

Chipping was very good again with the slightly modified technique. Although it is tough to say whether the frozen conditions are helping - i.e. mindset better with low expectations, plus maybe the firm ground allowing the club to bounce better rather than stick in the mud - but I'm feeling like I'm striking them better anyway and having more confidence at the moment.

No golf this weekend as the course has been closed for 2 days due to snow and ice.

Played last Thursday back up in Scotland. Only 9 holes with my brother as it was frozen and on temps, lost 2&1 but we both enjoyed it as it helped clear out the hangovers.

It's the current trend at the moment, but played today on a frozen course. thinned 99% of my shots, my iron game was non-existent today, which ironically put me in some good scoring positions.
My 3 wood was on fire today, lovely and straight and some good roll out, first time playing with my putter with a new superstroke grip on and was really cooking today, 31 putts, 9/14 fir 1/18 gir - total 96...

I booked 3 days off work to play this week, but I think I'll give tomorrow a miss and see how Wednesday looks.

It was -8°C when we teed off at 8 this morning.
We played surprisingly well considering the cold. Two layers of knitted cashmere, ultra-down jacket and rechargeable hand warmers did the job.
Our fourball had the course to ourselves and the greenkeepers had kindly swept an 8ft radius around each pin.

Apparently, after the overnight deluge of rain, on top of the melted snow from earlier in the week, 4 people (not from our group) still ventured out on to the course today. In a way you cant blame them if the club chooses to be open, but I reckon that there would have been parts of the course that would have been sloppier than...well....make up your own metaphor....the one I used on our Whats App group would probably see this post deleted!!! Cant help thinking that they would have been causing unnecessary damage to the course in certain areas.

A couple of us though decided to head off to a newly opened indoor Trackman simulator and had 18 holes round St. Andrews Old.

My 17.3 index mate handed my arse to me on a plate shooting 4 under his handicap whilst I was 4 over mine....mind you...on one hole I did have 4 shots from within a gorse bush before asking if there was any way to take an "unplayable". Wasn't impressed when, after slipping in to a double figure score for the hole the simulator said "putt for....other".

I also absent mindedly got the Bushnell out the bag to laser a flag for one approach!!

First time playing a full round on a simulator...played the odd hole or two here and there before, but never a full round. Took us about 1hr 40 minutes for us to play 18 holes. Quite enjoyed it and would certainly do it again.

I try and play a round each time I go now as well. Currently use Trackman twice per week, I played Lahinch last night and struggled as it seems really tight and I wasn't very accurate. Played a lot from the long stuff and was just rubbish. I don't do putting, I just set it to PGA Tour putting and hope for the best. One night I played Wentworth off the back tees, something like 7200 yards and that wasn't fun. Couldn't even reach the fairway on some of the carries off the tee if I didn't hit it sweet.

Some of the situations take a bit of getting used to like getting stuck in a bunker at Turnberry were I hit 3 shots that all hit the top of the screen but still couldn't get out until I figured out I could change my aim behind me and play it back to the fairway although in real life that would have been impossible as I was up against the face. Same with a bit of gorse, said the lie was 75-80% power which I thought was ok but 3 hits later I was still in the gorse. Overall though I really like it and I can get a full round done in about 50 minutes if by myself.

Course back open today and it was pretty dry, no mud on the trousers as they put us on the "Dunes" layout which misses out 3 holes that can get wet. Was good to just get out and swing the club though. Tried to play with the new swing feeling I practised this week and results were not good. Lost 3 balls, that's more than I've lost in the last 6 months I think. Nearly fresh aired the tee shot on 4 that just caught the toe and went straight right into the North Sea. Thinned the tee shot on 8 into 4 foot high fescue right in front of me never to be seen again and the final one was tee shot on 9 I aimed left side of the fairway as I cut my 3 wood, I caught it flush but unfortunately it had 20 yards of draw into the cabbage never to be seen again.

Back 9 was a bit better, was +2 on it but still hit some wild shots. More work required.
