I played today and..(Rolling) -originally created by JohnnyDee

Went out with a mate for 14holes. Absolutely beautiful late afternoon early evening. Hardly a soul on the course - we actually had it to ourselves as we played. Course in fantastic condition tee to green. Millionaire golf and what we pay our (relatively high) subs for. And we both played well. Glorious.

Flooded, darkness, swarm of locusts... what happened ?

2nd round of the Seniors Midweek Championship today.

Not really in contention after my nett 73 in the first round (11 shots off the lead) but started off with six consecutive pars.

Then, there's this golfer that lives within me....he likes to play a bit, he's not as good as me but the main issues is that you never know when he is going to turn up.

Today it was the 7th a downhill par 5 of around 520 yds. A weak drive into trees on the right, got a kind bounce out but slightly blocked off....could have tried aiming out to the left and hitting a heavy fade with a hybrid to get distance and position, but normal golfer was in control of the decision making process and I elected to hit an 8 iron over the left edge of the tree....plenty of room to clear. Inner golfer took over the swing process and proceeds to make contact with the baked earth 3 inches behind the ball and thin it (the ball, not the Earth) into the tree...bounces out though into a clear but bare lie. Inner golfer is now in full control and decides that 3 wood, off a bare crusty lie, about six inches above my feet is the shot to hit. Inner golfer pushes the ball into the trees. Normal golfer tells inner golfer to hit a provisional. Inner golfer spanks said provisional 30 yards further right into the same trees. Normal golfer finds first ball and plays a nice simple chip back onto the fairway...now 140yds out after playing 4 shots. Normal golfer then elects to play a 7 iron to the green but inner golfer has suddenly learned to draw the ball and it finds bunker pin high left. Inner golfer than shanks his sand shot, duffs a chip before leaving the proper golfer in this symbiotic relationship to 2 putt from 20ft.

...and so it continued.

Only 3 bogeys in my round...but inner golfer shot 3 doubles, two trebles and the aforementioned quadruple bogey.

Hilariously (not) on the 11th, I mentioned to one of the lads (lads? it was a seniors comp FFS) I was playing with that, in my previous round, I'd managed to find the 2ft wide ditch, (that crosses the fairway about 190yds off the tee) on the fly in my previous round...was going to hit the same club as I was highly unlikely to do it again (and the wind was all different). Nailed it...straight into the ditch, on the fly, no bounces. 1ft shorter, 1ft longer and I'd have been left with a lob wedge into the green as the ball would have bounced on like ordnance from a 617 squadron Lancaster. Cant blame inner golfer for that one though.

Ahh well....back to social golf and skins on Friday.

+10 on the front 9, +2 on the back 9 with 2 birdies, including on a par 3 from only 4ft. Now 10.9 from 13.9 only a few months ago.

Quick practice round, managed to squeeze 11 holes of fairly mixed quality in. Mostly bogeys. Hit a few accidental draws with driver and woods when I always set up for a fade, so that was annoying. Chipping was either great or rubbish - going to take time to bed in the lesson when I don't have much opportunity to practice it. Bunker play shocking. Mis-read some putts. All in all, starting to really worry about how the hell I'm going to play to 10 for the rest of the year now my form has run out... 😬

I went out for 10 holes as there was course maintenance underway.
Two of us played a scramble and finished at 4 under, happy with that .......................... but.
5th was playing at 125 yards and, with a gap wedge in hand, I only went and aced it!
First ever hole in one ............................ and I'm still buzzing!
I can't really believe it, I actually wondered whether it would ever happen.
It's taken decades to scratch that off my to do list!

Painful round yesterday.

Started with a routine par. 2nd got stuck in a bunker. 3rd lost ball. 4th stuck in another bunker.

2 points after 4 holes😳

Managed to get to 16 points by the turn, only to get stuck in another 2 bunkers on the back 9.

Ended up on 29 points which was borderline respectable, but it’s obvious where the problem lies, was in 5 bunkers and only got out of one first time.

Bunker lesson booked for Friday.

Course management maybe?
Are you reaching bunkers you normally wouldn’t.
Or just bad shots 😉

18 Holes on Monday and was on for my best ever score, was on 72 shots standing on the 17th Tee. Needed two pars to break 80! (Par 4 and par 3)
Ended up double bogey, treble bogey to card an 84 😭

Still a decent round and a 0.8 handicap cut!

Senior Club Champs today. Made a pigs ear of first three holes dropping four shots to par…was feeling very flat and down…but a birdie on 4 perked things up a bit and managed to finish 7 over gross. In the circumstances of the first three holes I’m happy with that and it gave me a respectable 12th place out of 94 playing. Nett - 38th…not unexpected…always going to struggle to do a Nett 67 (5 under par) off 5.

What is a bit frustrating is that a lot of my mistakes were shots that I’m generally pretty good at…and I three-putted the last 🤷‍♂️

ETA..When playing a ‘competitive’ round I will always take a song in my head onto the course - often one I’ve heard as I drive to the course, it help keeps me focussed and also acts as a distraction to stop me overthinking what I’ve just done (usually badly) or what I will have to do next. After three holes of the Seniors given my terrible start I changed songs to one I had used the previous time out when I scored well - and my golf improved and stayed improved.🙄. And before you ask…it was a Simply Red track…The Right Thing.👍

Stableford today and the last counting comp for me for a couple of weeks, and we played in a mixed bag of weather from sunshine to heavy showers. I actually played pretty well without any really bad shots, apart from my tee shot on the first. I had 7 pars and a birdie, spoilt by 3 double bogies, my putting was decent although I did have 4 three putts. gross 84 net 70 for 38 points was my best score of the year around my own course.

Not on the course but I had a lesson today at a 'golf centre ', Christmas present from my BiL.

First weird thing, I approach the desk, tell them I have a lesson booked, get told 'that will be £6.50'. I told them I had a voucher but no, that's for the balls 😳. For the lesson 😳. Can't say I was over pleased with that.

Anyway, general lesson, getting my swing tightened up. The pro noticed there was either no weight transfer or, on my bad shots, I was leaning back. He wanted me to hit through the ball more with a transfer of weight noticeably happening. Half swing, hit away. Great results, pretty much instant improvement 😍.

I'm not playing tomorrow but hopefully I'll get out on Sunday and put my newly found ball striking talents to the test (where clearly I'll not be able to replicate it 😭). Positive thinking...........A good lesson
