I played today and..(Rolling) -originally created by JohnnyDee

Lovely 9 holes on my own this afternoon, a good chance to put my recent lesson into play. I learnt some key points, the most important being I need to keep my chest / sternum over the ball when I hit it. If I don't do that I come up on the ball and either thin it or hook it.

If I do it, oooooo, very good indeed 😊. I'm hitting the ball more consistently out of the middle and I'm gaining 5-10 yards from each club. I'll take that.

I'm playing an open on Thursday, that will be the first proper test of my new technique.

Played a charity event today, first highlight is that counts as at day work 👌😂

The recent work I’ve been putting in to make the swing shorter and more compact to prevent the early extension and stop the right elbow getting away from me is starting to come together.

Swing feels short but it’s bang on 3/4 length, hands and arm position better. Plus tempo is lazier and smoother making the transition better. Also have changed putting grip to pencil grip recently just in practice and put that into play today.

Was a windy one out there today, playing off the whites. Lipped out for birdie from 15ft at 1st, birdied the 2nd. Then hit a tough stretch of holes with them all with cross winds. Despite the early birdie made the turn in +3 just because of the conditions Making it tough to score. But swing held up and ball flights were good.

Back 9, started with a bogey after my drive ended up in a divot but I was in the groove not even thinking about the swing! hit the ball superbly the only pain in the arse was the par 5, 15th hole! down wind the driver went off like a rocket only had a 6 iron left into green. Turns out was to much club ended up through the back, But some bright spark had cut the pin on right on the edge of the false front. Chipped up to what was a foot passed the hole thought the ball had stopped but no just caught the false front and rolled 30yards down the hill back down the fairway! So was long in 2, but short of the green in 3! End up with a 6! 🤔😒

Ended up playing the back half in +1 and shot Gross 76 in tough conditions and winning the gross. Overall the swing changes went well and changing the putting to the Pencil was a revelation, pace and control was on another level. Really happy with how I played today and a score differential of -4.7 sees me heading back down in the right direction.

I fiddle with my putting grip or stance from time to time. Putt like a pro for a couple of weeks and then regress to the mean :-(
Hopefully, not the case for you. Probably suggests that my brain needs rewiring rather than my set up.

I’ve had the same putting style since is was 13 years old never fiddled with it and always been pretty solid to be fair.

But recently just at home been helping Mrs M learn the game and found that was the easiest way to teach her and gave it a go myself and been grooving it in. Could just be it was time for a change but felt I could be even more positive with it but that could be as you say the brain just having a reset

Tyrell Hatton Junior Masters today for buggerlugs.
Arrived at Harleyford in good time, goody bag on arrival - a TH driver headcover, and pitch mark repairer, Ping Cap and ball marker, and a dozen Pro v1’s.
Tyrell was on the tee from early morning until 2.45 this afternoon watching all the juniors tee off, photographer on the tee then a free meal afterwards. Loads of volunteers on site, big scoreboard up - really well run event.
Jamie played steady but his putting took him out of the hunt for a prize.

Think he was just happy to get his tee shot away on the first with Tyrell watching on.
Hopefully we can make the trip back down south for next years event.

Had a meet today at Heythrop Park with other members of the Tour Golf Network which is Liam Robinson's group, through whom I've been getting the drills from that's helped me get my handicap so low.

Had an hour long group clinic with him, asking questions and him talking through certain things.

We then got to play afterwards and I started with a lovely birdie, hit the par 3 second and three putted, birdied the 3rd, missed a 5ft birdie putt on 4 and then birdied 5. I hit 14 of 18 greens and should have had more than the 3 birdies I made but everything felt so good today it is hard to complain.

Picked up on 11 after hitting my driver on the wrong line and losing it, in hindsight it's not a driver hole. I then compounded it with a mistake trying to hit the green from 220 out when it was probably a 210 carry over water.

I then blobbed 18 after being within 80 yards after 2 shots (par 5).

I ended up with 34 points and came 2nd, winning a lesson with Liam to use in the future, first place got 35 points and won a free round at Queenwood, how I am ruing those two blobs!

Lucky to get two rounds in over the weekend, both at courses that’ve hosted DPWT events, both in very nice condition
93 Sat followed by 79 on Sun, stooped game! No balls lost, driving was just as consistent across both days.
My perennial problem of being a short hitter struck again ( I use/waste all my handicap just getting to greens on a longer set up >6,500, but it was a comp so no choice in the matter)

Really glad I had the second round booked so that at least I came to work Monday with better memories to see me through the working week

29 points with a counter coming off sees my handicap rise for the first time since the start of June :( Came down 0.4 on Saturday and went up by 0.2 on Sunday, so I'm still lower than I was before the weekend, but it will be a shame to see an uptick on my blue line :(

Society day at Old Fold Manor

Not been there for a while , it needed a lot of drainage work last time I was there which they have done

But they don’t have any fairway watering there so after a scorched summer and then a week of heavy downpours meant they are a mess that’s going to take a while to sort out , very little grass and lots of mud

The greens though were superb

Yesterday I played at Lymm after answering a late call to make up a team for their ladies open, it was a team of 4 playing off 85%, I played decently and my putting held up well, the other 3 holed so many good putts, one even holed from about 50 yards and we won the competition, which was a nice bonus.

Interestingly I got 3 shots more playing at Lymm than at my own course and as long as you hit straight, there is not much danger apart ditches across the fairway on a couple of holes, we have far wider ditches and most of our holes. While the extra shots are nice it does make my scratch my head.

Club comp this morning in the rain.
Seniors better-ball off the yellow tees.

Partner and I got 44 points and won 3 points clear of second place.
I parred my 4 shot holes for 3 points each. I got two birdies on the back nine.
On the par 5 seventh hole I went into the left rough with my drive. Bunted one under the tree branches up the fairway a bit. Holed out with a 95-yard 50° wedge for an eagle.
We were both on the card 9 times each.
Me 26 and partner 18

I imagine that for my 4-under gross nine holes, I am going to get my lowest score differential of the year. Just have to wait and see.

Par 70, CR 69.1, SR 127
HI = 4.5

Any informed guesses as to what my score differential will be?

(EDIT: re-informed myself and I think it might be 2.6. A cut of 0.5 might ensue.)

Played at Worplesdon. Really was 4 seasons in 1 day. Played match play and lost on the last.
Had I think a first though as I birdied 3 holes in a row.
A par 5
A par 3
A par 4
Don’t remember ever doing it before.

Not to open a can of worms but I think it's crazy to get cut off half the holes counting in a betterball. You could have been triple bogeys on all the others! Mad system.

4bbb open at Dunstanburgh today. A links course with no wind today 😳. A number of the fairways were bare mud, they'll need to be sprinkling a lot of grass seed over the next few months. In otherwise excellent condition though.

Played generally well, better front 9 than back. Struck the ball cleanly, wasn't overly happy with my chipping. Putted well bar a couple of holes.

We had 36 points, we reckoned 40 would be about par today. 49 was winning 😵‍💫

Paired up with two smashing guys. One had been a very good junior, fallen out of love with the game, was back to enjoying it again. His chipping game was insanely good. The best I've ever seen up close. A real pleasure to watch.
