I played today and..(Rolling) -originally created by JohnnyDee

Started the season really poorly, mainly as the ball is going in random directions from tee shots. First qualifier of the season nine days ago, 14pts and last of 149 entrants. This Saturday 20pts and last of over 150 entrants (excluding DQs). Need to work out what needs tweaking quickly.

Your handicap? ;)

Could just be a confidence thing, did you play over the winter?

Bit rusty maybe? I'm sure you'll soon find your swing again, you were playing so well last year.

Played Raglan (Monmouthshire) today with a past captain.

It closed about 8 years ago, a lottery winner bought it and it reopened last month. It's still got some growing in to do, but they've made a super job of upgrading the clubhouse and surrounding area.

Not the greatest course, but always rated the holes on the back 9, front 9 less so, but plenty there to keep you interested.

Nice to see a "lost course" brought back to life.

Why the change?

I don't play enough to justify the cost, and the club feels a different animal than the first half of my membership period and i prefer the old version - saying that i think a lot of clubs haave also changed - much busier, more formal, rollups work less well and more cliquey. I still love the place and will continue social membership as nowhere nicer to have a late afternoon beer on a week like this than on the balcony and play as a guest a few times a year. But cost is the main factor - new place is less than half the cost.

Played 9 holes last night hoping that the improvements that i felt on the weekend would still be there..... they weren't and i was back to mishits and general dross ..... Why oh Why is it so good on the range and then so awful on the course.

played my last game as a member at Bearwood after 19 years of membership on Saturday and resigned today, with 3 days left and not likely to play again as working. Already joined the new club - East Berrkshire - and playing for only 3rd time on Saturday. Looking forward to a new golfing chapter
Like East Berks. Alison the GM will help if you need anything. Some of our guys jumped ship and joined as well

It is indeed a lovely setting and it's nice to not just be able to, but to choose to, use your club even when not playing.

My understanding (and in my experience though limited) is that we've had a significant change in how our clubhouse is perceived and used by members following our major refurbishment and reconfiguration of bar, lounge and dining areas - essentially the totality of our clubhouse ground floor. Members are starting to choose to come to the clubhouse with family and friends for lunch, a snack or just a drink - and most, if not all, club evening social functions seem very well supported - more than previously - we are very pleased with the outcome.

Couldn't waste the great weather so snuck out for a sweaty nine holes.

Started off alright with some cracking drives, then things started going wrong one at a time. First a three putt, then driver strikes that sounded and felt so bad I didn't know if they were heels or toes - then the bloody bunkers. Took two to get out on two occasions. First double was on the 16th (played back nine).

The 18th really boiled my pee though. I've decided lately that going to down to 7 wood off the tee is better as it leaves me a full 50° into the green instead of an awkward 60 or 70 yard pitch. Got the first bit right, perfect tee shot - knifed the 'easy' full 50 through the back of the green and made another double. Stupid bloody game. That's a blob which left me on 16 points for the nine. Oh well. If knew how to get out of a bunker I'd have had 18.

Why you laying up? Go for the green!

We played there fairly often on our annual trip to Monmouth. As you say, back nine much better than the front nine.

9 holes tonight. A good relaxed round 4 bogies 2 birdies.. driving back on point and long. Irons were good ..golf in a good place.

Hope you enjoy the change. Totally understand the motives.
