I played today and..(Rolling) -originally created by JohnnyDee

The last scramble I played in, we had a 3, two 8s and a 13 (me)

We played out of our skin and shot 11 under gross, with a handicap of 5 we ended up on net 56, which we knew, going out on Sunday, was the leading score from the Saturday.

The winners got 14 shots and came in with net 54! Jokey cries of "14 SHOTS?!" rang out around the clubhouse* upon hearing that there was such a team

* I may or may not have started it

EDIT: It was a good fun day out and I'd do it again. We came tied second so it wasn't impossible for us to win, but we always knew it would be difficult as there would likely be a high-shot team that didn't have to score that well

4th weekday medal of the year today. First one was 1-4-25. Been one every Tuesday so far.
First two I was garbage.
Last week managed a 0.5 cut to 4.1
Today it looks like a 0.2 cut to 3.9 for replacing a 6.2 with a 4.5
And so far I'm the only one of 10 players to make a 2.
Currently in 2nd place nett.
Another 10 or so out on the course.

Next 4 scores to drop off are not in my best 8.
Very pleasing to see a downward trend on the HI graph.

EDIT: Finished 4th place, but only one shot behind winner.
Over a tenner in pro-shop credit for my 2

A real treat today, Played at Royal Birkdale in the Lancs senior ladies championship for the lowly cost of £25. We couldn't have had a better day and it was a joy to play there. There was a lot of work going on around the course in preparation for next years Open and it meant some of the tees were more forward than they usually are. It was interesting that they have taken out what I though was the trickiest par 3, the 14th and replaced it with a new par 3 which is now the 15th and I didn't find it as tricky.
I played pretty well apart from a bad drive on the 9th which cost me a triple bogey and then on the 14th where after finding a bunker off the tee, I then managed to lose a ball and came off with a 10, they knocked me right back and I proceeded to 3 putt the following 3 holes, although I did recover for nice 4 on the last.
I very nice day in all though

16 under wouldn't get you in the top 10 up here (Edinburgh and East Lothian mainly) they are regularly being won with 19 or 20 under sometimes more, it's hardly worth entering now

There was a 4-man scramble at our club on Good Friday.

Net 20-under for the winning team.
Tie for 2nd place - both teams 19-under.

I decided to dodge them some years ago.

At least those scores suggest it was reasonably competitive. At ours any team event seems to be won by one group annihilating the field.

I cut mine down to 3 or 4 last year and just played on courses that I really like so at least it's an enjoyable day, shooting the equivalent of 18 birdies won't trouble the scorers at the majority now unless it's at a tough track, for us The Roxburghe at Kelso or similar

I believe when EG “made up” the HC allowances they decided that they would look at the “ideal team”

A low , couple of mid and a high handicapper - and they come up with made up allowances

so we had PH’s of

0 , 3 , 6 and 15

So it’s 25% of the allowance is the lowest HC - so 25% of 0 is 0

Overall is gives around a shot

In the old system we used it would have given us one more shot which isn’t a big difference

But what it did do was reduce the amount of shots other teams got

The winning team for example got 9 shots

Old format they would have got 4 - a lot more balanced

Since the changes our Scrambles are only a one by mid to high HCs now

We still have scramble comps here with stroke allowance is based on the 10% of total etc, plus a min number of counting drives + a mandatory par 3 by each player
Had one 2/3 weeks ago & I cant recall any team having a high enough handicap that would take a low H/C team out of contention, especially with the tee shot requirements thrown in

Yeah a couple I played last year had brought back the 10% of combined h'caps as opposed to the 25/20/15/10% whs format, was told by one it was following many complaints and 'an attempt to roll back the winning score a bit' could have just been his own opinion of course 😉

Played late yesterday afternoon with Jamie - midweek medal, picked him up from school so we were out on the course by 3.50pm.
18 holes, a quick photo of the 18th, pint in the clubhouse while I entered my score and we were home by 7.45pm

I played yesterday . I had a slight thigh strain and was being cautious for the first few holes
3 doubles and one single in the first 5 holes ruined a really good total of 37 points.
Although 2nd place the swindle only pays the winner.

9 holes tonight. Great 3 putt start then a block down the 2nd but had a window into the green.. so hit it short and then played the putter to 1.5ft for a par.. otherwise everything was in a similar vein but all okay.. the final hole was okay could see the green and I could get a 5 wood to it and promptly popped it to 10ft from 210 yards. Missed the putt 🤣

Another round that looked a lot like Sunday’s round. Poor front 9, was +6 which included missing 4 putts from inside 4 foot, a double on a par 5 when I was hitting my 3rd from 82 yards in the fairway and a 3 putt par from 18 foot after driving the 4th, missing my birdie putt from about 18 inches.

Back 9 I putted much better, not sure if it was the thought that my round was over but was much more positive, holed a couple in the 9-12 foot range and didn’t miss anything within 6 foot. Ended the round +7 which I was actually happy with.

A couple of good scores have dropped off and I’m now up to 3.8 which feels more like my level. Don’t have a counting score in my next 5 so got a few rounds to try and get it down a bit. Think I need to find some time to get on the putting green and get some sort of practice routine.

Flying in the midweek stableford, 2 under gross after 8, bogeyed 9 by missing a shortish putt, then bogeyed 13, 14, , 15 (from the middle of the fairway), and 16 . Tramlined a 20 footer for a 2 on 17 then smashed a drive down 18 that went 280 into a fairway bunker for another bogey.

Finished 4 over for a small cut but feel like I’ve thrown one away.

Played Slaley Hall for the first time yesterday. We were on the Priestman. Really enjoyed the course and the whole set up. Played ok apart from my putting which was awful, numerous 3 putts, and missed a couple of very short ones. 28 points as a result.

Funny place though. The course was absolutely deserted, only saw one other pair all day. I guess that given its remoteness, it is targeted at corporate clients and holidaymakers.

Definitely sounds like the putter and youneed to get better acquainted from short distances. Keep battling away

Agree. I spent some time a couple of weeks ago and I have been putting better for the last few rounds. The misses last night, I thought I hit good putts but they moved more than I thought or they bobbled off line. Like a lot of places our greens aren't in good shape at the moment through no fault of the greenkeepers. I understand the weather is not ideal for greens at the moment and you can see they are working on them, they sprayed a few of them last week with what I can only guess is some sort of fertiliser as they are much darker than the other greens. We currently have very firm, pretty fast but bobbly greens, not a great combination for inspiring confidence. Other guys are still putting well on them though so it's something I need to figure out.

Overall I hit a lot of good, positive putts last night. I had at least 4 that burned edges and finished 2 foot past. Just 2 inches either to the left or right and they drop. I'm hitting a lot more putts on my target line now as well, I'm not missing putts by 2 foot left or right, most look like they have a chance to drop. I just need to keep a positive mindset, get to the practice green a bit more often and hopefully some will start to drop.
