I played today and..(Rolling) -originally created by JohnnyDee

My 1st comp ot the year today...Stableford and I only got 6 shots 😫
Used 2 of them on the first 2 holes...nice.....
Settled down after that and turned with 17 points, 4 over gross
Nice steady back 9 with 2 bogeys and a birdie 2 ( 2s money😋) for 20 points and a 5 over 76.
Small cut incoming and leader in the clubhouse although there are a few tk come in....
Regardless of the result, a satisfactory opening salvo for the year..

Sneaked out for a few holes after work with 2 of the lads. We managed to get 14 holes in before the sun was due to go down and we got sick of the cold wind.

I played garbage, not a single redeeming part of my game. Driver, irons, chipping and putting were all garbage, was probably +10 for the 14 holes.

One of the lads had 5 birdies and on 17 he had a hole in one with his second ball. Wind howling off the left, he hit his usual cut and the ball landed on the green but ended up just running off. He dropped another and said “I’m going to hit a draw” something I’ve never seen him do with an iron. It drew maybe 3 inches as it was just arrow straight, right at the hole. Neither of the other 2 actually watched it but I saw it land and it was all over the flag, next second it just disappears. I said “that’s in by the way” and the other 2 were like “what? We weren’t even watching”. 😂

Obviously the big discussion was does it count as a hole in one or not.

Of course not. It was a holed tee shot but not a hole-in-one. If you were playing proper rules he's gone three off the tee and parred it - or he gets a penalty for practising on the course. 😂
So those hole in one challenges you see on YouTube don’t count if they guy does it? Should they be renamed to “Can you get the ball in the hole in 1 try?”

Re HiO y/n? -------------- Nup!

I'll take a drink off the fella in the bar but not expecting him to claim a hole in one and his name wont make it on the wall if he tried, nor will the club give him a certificate

Well yeah, I doubt Bryson is claiming the one over his house as a genuine hole-in-one. There just isn't another name for it. 😄

Got out for 7 holes, 4 ball in front stopped me completing the 9 before darkness. Wasn’t a great round, I came off the range having been striking the ball beautifully only to be thinning it over the first 2 shots. I was struggling with distance control, I played an up hill par 3 with a mid distance of 138 yards and back of 150yards .. took an 8 iron and pured it out the back. But the round carried on like this. There was a lot of promise.

Played today and shot a steady 34 points in the Stableford comp. What did surprise me was talking to the lads who had played today. Out of 18 that played in our fuddle today. only two of us went in the club comp. The lowest handicapper in the comp played off 7. He was the other guy in our fuddle. Talking to the guys they have said there’s not a cat in hells chance they will go in the midweek fudddles when you have players playing off 30 odd handicaps clearing up. Out of 37 players only 3 were from division one. Six of the top 7 were women.
For me there is something fundamentally wrong when good golfers will not enter competitions.
Before WHS. Our club ran white, yellow and women’s/ red tee comps of which there was separate divisions. Now white, yellow, red tees and men and women are all clubbed together. To the best of my knowledge no one ever complained about the old format. So why was it changed. It was not broke, but someone thought it needed fixing. Talking to the guys they have said if it carries on they will not enter club comps midweek and just put in cards through the EG APP.
As much as I understand the reasoning. Another point for me is that the club will suffer from a financial point of view. I am all for golf being open to everyone but when it stops good golfers from entering club comps, something is seriously wrong.

Smashing day at Styal. Wife's first game this year. She *** a respectable 111 with two double digit holes. Me? Dreadful. Four putted....TWICE. Driver not working, which is massive part of my game. Loads of other stuff was rubbish too. Somehow shot 88. First game on grass for me so I'm blaming that. Greens were great for the time of year. Loads of work done to tidy the course up as well. I won by a point

Got out for 12 holes with the boy this eve, mainly to give my new driver a try. It's a TSi 3 as he has snaffled the tsr3 we got last month! The tsi doesn't feel quite as nice yet but it apparently works👍

I was one over he was 3 over so still holding on to the house crown for now 🤣

It was a fabulous morning today for the last of our 12 hole winter comps, my first tee shot was a shocker but I scrambled a bogey, I ought to have then parred the next 8 holes but sadly three 3 putts meant bogies instead of pars, the first putts all looked good but the speed of the greens meant they just kept rolling, bogey on 10, par on 11 and then the 4th 3 putt bogey.

On the plus side I hit the ball nicely after the 1st and scored 27 points, I didn't have worse than a 5, didn't have worse than a bogey, hopefully things bode well for the season start next week.

The positive vibes are great! A lot different than many other reports/posts! Keep it going.

After having a think about it the Wilson 2025 triad ball is very good for driver distance, short game spin and putting. But I have my doubts about its spin characteristics off irons and 3/4 iron shots. I think it’s long but it has a tendency to roll on. Yesterday I was caught out, because I play to middle to back yardages.. hence me going through greens with it regularly and really quite uncertain of my distance control.

Bit of a theme this week -

Tuesday - 22 points front 9, playing some lovely stuff, go seriously off the boil on the back 9, 3 blobs, 12 points
Thursday - 23 points after 10, going along nicely, then it gets very scrappy, end up scrambling for 1 pointers, 9 points over the last 8 holes.

Not sure if its mental, tiredness or lack of concentration, but it’s not a good trend 😳

Eat or drink on the way round?
