I played today and..(Rolling) -originally created by JohnnyDee

We played in a seniors 4BBB open at Hartlepool, the best score when we left was 43 points, we managed a paltry 36 as we both struggled to get to grips with the greens.

I'm a big fan of Hartlepool and the course itself was in decent nick, but I have to give a big shout-out to the quality of the bunkers, almost a joy to be in them, unlike my home course (see random irritations).

5 plus a putter isn't really pushing it is it? Bit of a cop out. We are carry only at the moment and I reckon that's all I currently have in the bag 😄
Yeah, I don't get it....but it is what it is so I'll deal with it. I usually carry 9.....maybe 10 at the most since I can't really feel the difference. Taking 3 clubs out isn't much of a difference. I've always thought they should make it just 3 clubs.....or even 4 clubs and you can decide whether you want to take a putter with you or not.

Love South Shields. If I live closer I'd be a member there.
It's the place to be in winter in the North East, remarkable really. We were looking across to the adjoining Whitburn GC and seeing how wet and miserable for the poor souls playing it . Walking down the 6th there was a lake in a farmer's field! There are better courses around but if they offered a winter membership I would join.

We played in one of their winter opens one time and bumped into two other members of our club in the car park who were both waiting for their partners to arrive, they were travelling together.

Tee times were looming and it was getting close to twitchy bum time. A quick phone call revealed that they had arrived early and had breakfast in the clubhouse, they were now in the car park wondering where everyone was. Unfortunately, it was the car park of Whitburn GC.

One of the two is as thick as bulls lugs. South Shields at the time had a fantastic menu and after the round we all sat down to enjoy great meals, bar one. He had ordered ham and chips. The waitress came out and queried his order asking him if it was definitely ham he wanted and not a nice thick juicy gammon steak, no, definitely ham.

Our joy when his plate was brought out with two scabby bits of ham on it was only bettered by his non-stop whining about the said scabby ham. Like I said, bulls lugs.

9 today with @Springveldt and another couple of guys. They carried on for a full 18 but that was enough for me. Frozen course, 18 temp greens, happy with my decision 😄.

It's winter golf, a good walk, swing the clubs. I was swinging a bit too fast at times today, forgot my 'swing slow' mantra. Also tugged a few, which was either about alignment or taking the club out too wide and swinging across myself. Inbetween were some nice strikes, enough to feel comfortable about.

Cold but clear, it was a pleasant walk with good company.

I managed 18, but it was hard work carrying. Front 9 frozen, my spikeless shoes didn’t cope well, felt pretty unstable.

Back 9 got wetter and wetter, 12 or 14 would have been plenty.

Scoring was very difficult, just about impossible to hold anything on the temps. Ended up with 32 points, less than I managed for 14 holes on Thursday. I wasn’t the only one who had that experience today.

A 3 on 8 and a lovely bacon sandwich afterwards were the highlights of the day.

There were a few holes where we teed off outside the tee zone simply because it was too slippy/icy. The back 9 tends to be wetter anyway, throw in it had chance to thaw a little by then as well.

I'm impressed you kept score. With 18 temps I didn't bother.

That last sentence saved the day for you. It would even at the height of summer 😄

16 holes (17+18 closed) today for a 5 clubs and a putter. 30 pts. Short game killed me. I've said it before....and I'm saying it again.....I'm going to practice my chipping this year. I'm throwing too many shots down the crapper. The tee times were booked solid the whole day....even though everybody had to carry. The old folks at this club are tougher than most.

Played in a society 1st round knockout today.

Shot an 81 for a 6&4 win. I wasn't at my best but good enough to win. My short game and putting made up for my long game today

First full round for a little while and I ended up pretty kerred.

We were on buggy route which means about 4 times as much walking for me and it showed.

Too many missed putts to help out for the missed irons.

Best score in the group today did not even play to handicap.

Went to the club for an hour to hit a few balls. After 30 mins a mate comes over and says do you want to make up a 4 ball for 8 holes. 18 holes later…….. Nice sunny day but my, some areas of the course were soaking. Also, as I wasn’t expecting to play I didn’t have my range finder or GPS with me. Probably the 1st time in over 10 years I haven’t had some sort of distance device when out on the course. Had to rely on the yardage markers but still managed a 3 over par round.

As you said, good company but that wasn’t golf. I guess the highlight for me was the eagle on 3 were I hit my drive to about 3 foot. Swing was all over the place today, combination of starting speed training again I guess and the horrible underfoot conditions. Spikeless shoes in those conditions offer nothing, felt like Bambi on ice hitting some shots.

Back 9 it thawed out and really some of them should still have been closed (13,14 and 17 for sure) and it was just wet and muddy the whole way round. Was finally glad to get off the course tbh, felt like it’s taken part in a Tough Mudder run.

I’m off to Newbiggin next weekend. 😂

To handicap:
+6 yesterday
+1 today

Several shots left out there so I know I can beat my PB now (81 gross )
Roll on the next individual round....

Finally played some decent golf! The score didn't completely reflect it - just crept back in the 80's with an 89 - but the course is still muddy and saturated of course so that was a factor. In terms of how I struck the ball and played generally, it was lightyears better than the last several weeks. Driving was still a bit wayward which let me down a few times, but striking on everything else was so much better. The new Odyssey O-Works putter was great as well - 31 putts for the round and felt really confident with it - huge improvement there.

Some vague sparks of hope at last.
