Monthly s'ford this morning and the results are in, I came 2nd on countback. Arggghhhhhh  I don't really care about winning but I really want to qualify for the end of season masters competition and I'm running out of chances.

Can't really blame countback though, I was 5 over gross on the 16th tee and finished doubl, double, bogey.

Still, 36 points in difficult conditions and my first cut of the year so at least my handicap is going back in the right direction.

Welcome to th curse of the Ascot countback. On the plus side next time out I managed to win so hope you do the same. I'm in the Masters for the 5th consecutive year.

See you've solved the 1st hole issue and came home in an ambulance. Some brilliant stuff beween 2 and 15

Not a lover of countback myself. Lost on the countback in my last comp. Finished birdie par par birdie (3 better as I had a shot in that as well). But I played the course the wrong way round, starting on 10 so the tidy finish did matter on countback.

I wanted to introduce a Local Rule that Lady Captain ALWAYS won when countback was required.
for one year, anyway....

Wouldn't say double on the first was exactly solving it :D

Also, the next comp is the club championship so can't see me winning that but at least I'm confident I can make the 2nd round now!

It should go to extra time and then penalties.

Chip off or putt off on the practice green? Anything golf related that requires skills rather than a statistical anomaly.

It's got to be settled on the day. Count back is the best and I would suggest ONLY way to do it. (I've won twice using it!)

It's pretty much the same in any situation where things are equal, most ways of separating the parties are luck you may as well toss a coin.
I would like to see exact handicap taken into account in case of a tie before countback.

Won the GM comp , but lost a place in the all Ireland final of the Audi Quattro Cup on a countback , 32 teams , top 6 to qualify for final in Kilarney GC .. 40 pts in scotch foursoms to finish 7th , . 6th was 40pts also ..

I don't think there is any other way of deciding a tie and while people say it is down to luck, if you look back over a round there are always mistakes that you make that cost you a win.

Yesterday I had 5 double bogeys, 3 of which were caused by poor chips and one by a bad drive. I was 5 over gross (despite carding 3 doubles in 15 holes) with 3 to play and finished 10 over. Countback shouldn't even have been needed, I should have smashed it.

Although my post was entitled "I hate countback", what lost it for me was my poor golf over the last 3 holes. If anyone who has lost on countback thinks back over their round they will find silly mistakes that are more to blame than countback itself

I think using either odds or evens would be a better way to do it rather than last 9 at least that way it is over the round not the back 9. You will always protect the score a bit on the back 9 if you have a great front 9 and get beat by the guy who has not a lot to play for on the back 9 and has a blinder.

When I posted the same thing a couple of months ago I was just told to "man up" and accept it!

I cant think of a different way except to have a random selection of stroke indexes being the ones that do the splitting of tied teams. at least, say 10 random stroke indexes, 5 from each 9, would seem fairer to me as, by definition, the player/s who did the back 9 best did the front nine worse - so why should they win?

Can't see that as being any better or fairer than normal countback.

I would suggest lowest number of blobs (proably zero for each) then lowest number of 1 pointers etc or net equivelent if strokeplay.

This would mean that the consistant player would win (I think!).

Still can't see it. Why should the more consistent player prevail over one who has more ups and downs?

Not fairer Rose but it's at least totally random!

Can you stop calling me Rose? Rosie from Imurg is bad enough.
