Recently picked up a couple of sets of coated shaft Tom Stewart stamped irons.

  • Frank Jowle Owen Model (third in The Open in 1955)
  • Spalding, Henry Cotton (Spalding acquired T. Stewart at some date I'm unsure of)

The Frank Jowle has a fanned line face and the Henry Cotton a punch dot face.
Non parallel lines are illegal and I suspect that some of the punch dot marks are too deep so both of these are illegal for competition play, although I could quite legally use a modern iron with a hot face, loads of perimeter weighting and a high tech shaft.
Luckily I don't care and will happily play either in club competitions.

What is the theory behind the punch dots on the club?
Was this common on older clubs?

Yes.
I'm "seeing" people who sell stuff on ebay.

Did you read the last few lines about some stuff I've sold.
I don't like to brag (OK, I'm lying) but the profits have been considerable at multiples of 100% at times.

I'm addicted to making a collection of sets of clubs from the 1960s and 1970s at nett zero cost.
Very enjoyable hobby it is too.

Over the last 18 months I've made 16 separate ebay sales and sold some to mates at what I paid.
Over the winter I'm intending to sell some more sets of irons and woods.
Hoping to end up with 15 full sets plus a few more extra woods, wedges and putters at overall better-than-zero cost.

How much have you spent on golf clubs over the last 3 years?
Are you seeing anyone about this?

The first irons were smooth faced, then various means of indenting were tried with punch dots by far the commonest as they were the easiest (as Clubchamp says)

Various other types of punch were used, squares, very short lines, etc so I guess someone decided to join the lines up.
The difficulty in the early days was getting the lines looking good, until they started to do them all together using a die pressed into the face.

Punch dots are still legal but must follow the dimensions given in the rules governing conformance of clubs.

Today I bought (actually it arrived today from Scotland) a Callaway 454 Driver high launch (probably 15 degrees - advertised as 13). Pretty much good as new, very beautiful club. I have always struggled with driver, tried all kinds of options. I always hit 3 wood off the tee pretty well, but it's an unforgiving option. So an almost 460cc 3 wood sounds like a good choice. We'll see!

Finally found some replacement runners for my skates that don’t cost more than new skates. Not to see if they arrive from Finland
