Hybrids, the new chipper?

LOL then we'll just stop talking about golf then? :)

Look at the degrees of lofts on them though, they are all very similar, same as 3,4 and 5 woods.

Imagine this one then, A mizuno tour pro bag, reads like a dream bag to most aspiring golfers
MP630 Driver
MP titanium fairway 3 wood
MP 68's
MPt-11 wedges
.............except, hang on, the 3 and 4 irons from the silky smooth mp68's are missing and have been replaced with clunky great big toes.

This is a fair argument each and everyone to their own....BUT.......

Brendy!....If your such a big fan of the Long iron over the Hybrid then why dont you replace your 3 or 5 wood with the equivelent 1 and 2 iron......?

Im sure that if your able to smack your 3 iron that well then you should have no problem getting a 1 or 2 iron airborn.....At that rate why bother with the woods at all......
You said in your 1st post "Am I wrong to love my longer irons and hate the hybrid? After all, isn't that what woods are for? "
Nothing wrong with that statement but dont judge other people for using technology to their advantage....After all i wouldnt say that your driver is any more than 3-4 years old...
Im not having a rant at you here either...Im just curious

Not sure what the longest iron in your bag is but im guessing its maybe a 3 iron or 2 iron....
And i dont know your handicap but......Can you honestly say that from 2 or 3 iron distance ?????? your more accurate with a long iron than a wood?

I love my 3-iron, in fact for years before I got Driver & 3-wood it was all I used off the tee. However, I tend to hit it quite low with a draw and find I get little or no control. The last couple if years I swapped a hybrid in and out of my bag. I currently have the hybrid in but wouldn't bet that the 3i won't get another run at some point this year.

Each club has it's own merits and surely the hole point of golf is to get the lowest score possible. If you're happy with your 3i then go ahead and use it but I don't see how that is a reason to hate hybrids.

Do you own a Skycaddie/GPS Brendy?
I don't fella, never felt the need to get one to be honest. I can judge distances fairly well, especially when our course has 100 and 150yd markers, I am a 9 handicap hacker, I dont need to know if it is 58 or 59 yards to the pin, finding the middle of the green usually is good enough for me. :)

I have to admit I am a fan of the Hybrid, have a 17 and 23.
They are a dream in Links golf, especially on Long Par 5's, hit a low driver, get plenty of run, hit a low flight hybrid, plenty of run again, a bit of luck and you run up on the green.
Are they easier to hit than a 3 iron, yes, are they more versatile than a 3 iron, absolutely.
Everyman to themselves, that's why golf is the fantastic game it is.

Lol guys, I am not being elitest about this, I have not mentioned anything about shafts etc either.

The main difference between hybrids and persimmon clubs of olde is that the lie angle of a hybrid is modelled on an iron with the intention of it being like an iron but easier to hit.

Regarding the driving range, I honestly have never noticed anyone using them, this is obviously not definitive and all encompassing.

The game of golf is a fairly traditional game, some aspects have been widely updated and accepted, hybrids being one of them. Does this make them better than irons and learning how to play the game that Hogan, Nicklaus, Seve, even more recently Woods etc thrived at without the need for hybrids, rescues etc.

Ultimately I accept guys needing one hybrid maybe, a collection I can even bite my tongue, you will never see me carry one though.
Just dont get me started on chippers, the hybrid short game instrument.

i would never been seen in a jap boy racer car but i do like their golf clubs :D

I consider my long irons one of the better parts of my game, I carry a driver, 5 wood 3-pw, 50, 54 and 58 deg wedges.
I am losing the 5w to a new MD F3 wood this week too. If I could get my hands on a Titleist AP2 2 iron, Id take it in a second, granted I'd be down the range getting acquainted with it before setting foot on the course.

I only use my 5wood when there is either no wind or wide open targets to aim for, the 3 iron comes out at all other times. I use it off the tee at 6 par 4's at my course, perhaps it is the amount of practice and use it gets that makes it my favorite iron. As mentioned earlier, horses for courses, this thread has made for great light hearted discussion without too many people throwing the toys.

Well thats what the Forum is for....Banther.... :D :D

Now whats that same 3 iron like off the fairway or the rough or is it a club thats only used on tee shots.....
I find hitting long irons off tee's pretty easy.....Now out of the rough or off the fairway then thats a matter for my hybrid.....
Oh my longest iron is actually a 4 iron which i like hitting then i drop to a 21 degree G15 hybrid.....

Kid, off the deck too, was hitting it onto a couple of greens on Sunday too. Im a hacker, never said otherwise but there is something great about hitting a long iron flush.

I'd better watch my back at any forum meets then.

In the bag.

High launch draw biased driver.
Hybrids 1 to 4.
TM Superlaunch 5 to PW.
4 wedges, inc. a 64 degree.
Broom handle itsy putter.
A chipper.
A sponge ball cleaning thing.
Bead, shot counter.
Black glove.
Black golf shoes with shorts.
A towel hanging off my belt.
A tour bag.
And I can easily carry 300 yards with the driver.
And I play 4 times a year off 28 in golf societies.

Go on. Hate me. I know you want to. :D

Oh damn. There I go. Lying again! :p

Yea its a pencil bag, must be like a tardis with all that gear in it though :D

Fixed. :D
Fixed or corrected! haha. Definately some days where the swing belongs to a garden gate and doesnt matter if it is a wedge or a 3 iron.

since having my new irons I do actually love hitting the 4 iron and have gone from two hybrids to one but looking down on my new 4 iron it looks huge compared to my old one and almost hybrid-like, I feel like I'm still cheating!(and I loves it!) :D :D

Well Brendy my dad is 60 this month i play every week with him.....He uses Mizzy MX23's 3-SW.....
He also hits his 3 Iron and doesnt carry a Hybrid....

His theory is that he never had a driver and woods learning and all he used to hit was Irons.....Oh he's off 12 as well :D

There is a method to the madness!
I believe if you keep your targets as straight forward as possible and challenging, it keeps you trying. Lower your expectations and I believe you wont play as well.
Stand on a teebox and just aim for any part of the fairway and you will likely miss it, aim for a very specific patch or tree in the distance and the majority of times the error margin will be a lot less.
