Hybrids, the new chipper?

I think the problem also comes from the fact that a lot of sets these days are only coming in 4-PW anyway and that if you want a 3 iron you have to buy it separately. Given the choice most people will opt for the option because a) that is what they'll get offered b) what they have become use to and c) because when all is said and done they are easier to use and offer more shot options for the average golfer

From what i can gather from this thread some like hybrid/rescue clubs others think they make the game to easy!

For me i have an 18 degree recovery club thing that goes great out the rough, on the fairway round the greens i think it is a great go to club when your pushing a 4 iron so i need to take it out the bag cause it is making the game to easy and put my 3 iron in which i would not mind but into a stiff wind takes a much better strike to perform.

Dont make the game any more difficult lads....we are not pros...

Its not making the game easier, they get the ball out of the rough a little easier, yea, I just dont believe they are as accurate as an iron.

If they were so accurate, why not hit them off the tee then you wouldnt need to hit it from the rough ;)

I still don't get why they aren't accurate? The shaft length on mine is the same as a 3i, the loft is the same, it goes the same distance. To all intents and purposes, it's a 3i. It just looks different.

Can we have a change of title to the thread please?

a) Hybrids - I don't like them.

b) Long Irons - Satisfying to hit.

c) I think I'm a pro (but I do well to break 80)

Make up your mind Brendy, one post says that hybrids are the easy route, then you are saying they aren't making the game easier? :D

I think what Brendy is saying is that he's more accurate with a 3 iron than a 20 handicapper with a hybrid.

Shock - a 10 handicapper is more accurate than a 20 handicapper. My ghast has never been so flabbered.

I am saying that hybrids get the ball into the air, even from a little rough, but there is no directing them.

How many times do I have to declare myself an average handicapper? (btw its 8.5 not 10 :D) I dont see myself as anything special, especially when I go out and play with better guys.
Murph, In my experience, the guys use these clubs from the rough but never seem to make the best use out of their situation. I think Hybrids flatter you in that yes they do get you airbourne but the whole judgement aspect goes out of the window with club twist, how much of the actual ball you are getting at and how much the grass slows down the clubhead. As I said, taking ones medicine seems to be lost on some folks.

I have a 17* hybrid thingy that I got when I started playing again a couple of years ago. It was done on the pros advice , he trotted out all the reasons everone else has alluded too. Great I thought that'll do for me. Since then I have a bought a 3 iron for my set and have now ordered a 2 iron as well.

I just cant stand that hybrid thing , a ghastly club that I make up excuses not to use on the course. It may well get the ball airborne easier and be easier to hit out of semi rough but i dont like them. Anyway i'm either on the fairway or in deep clinkenclanken so I dont need anything to hit from light rough :p

I see both sides of the camp but as many peeps have said , each to their own and i'm in the long iron camp :D

When I am slicing my driver this is exactly what I do. 3 hybrid off the tee. I loose a lot of distance but I hit a lot more fairways.

8.5 is much better than average. I think the average is about 20, and you'd be giving me 15 strokes if we played so no wonder you're more accurate with every club in the bag ;)

I have my 16 degree hybrid for the gap between my 3 wood and 3 iron. Not keen on playing a 2 iron or 5 wood.Despite the loft being similar to a 3 wood, because of the shorter shaft it doesn't go nearly as far. Not sure which camp that puts me in, although Smiffy might have his say. ;)

I sometimes use a 19 degree hybrid instead of a 3 iron depending on conditions. With this wet weather i would much rather hit a hybrid than a 3 iron off sodden fairways.

In the end it comes down to personal choice, what you can hit well, and feel confident with.

Imagine what it mght be with a couple of hybrids in the bag.

;)
Haha very good! :D

I have a rescue club.
Because I'm a wedge tart and carry 4 of them I needed to drop another club.
Therefore instead of having a 3 iron and 5 wood I have a rescue which sits right in the middle of the 3 wood & 4 iron.

I use my rescue from anywhere between 100 and 220yds, from the tee, fairway, rough and fairway bunkers.

It is good for hitting par 5s in two (and some par 4s), long par 3s, and for hitting off the tee when driver or 3 wood will go too far.

I am confident and accurate with it, just as I was with my 5 wood and 3 iron, but I find that it suits my game, local course and love of wedges.

I think I can safely say that it is the best club I have ever bought!

Not sure about the point of hitting a hybrid out of the rough and it flattering people. Until they came along, for a lot of people a trip to even the light rough would mean a hack forward with a 7 or 8 iron. Nowadays at least you have a chance to advance it forward. I reckon on a reasonable lie in the rough that I'd lose around 20-25 yards through the club slowing down through the grass and so take that into account when working out whether to go for a green or looking for a lay-up. Course management.

It comes out lower (in my case) than a shot with it off the fairway but always runs (it tries in the wet too). I love it for the par 3's at my place as it is the ideal yardage and stops quicker, coming in higher than a conventional long iron.

I'm sorry Brendy but what's not to like. I get the ball back into play and longer than using an iron, I can control the distances (through common sense) and I can get it to do what I want off the tee and fairway.

As I said, taking ones medicine seems to be lost on some folks.

Err.

So give me a choice between hacking out sideways and having 200 to the green .........

or

Getting the hybrid under it, advancing it 120 anywhere on the fairway and leaving me a smooth sand wedge in.......

????????????????????????????????

Sorry - can't make up my mind which I'd prefer.. :D
