Hybrids, the new chipper?

I don't understand your gripe Brendy....hybrids are easy to manouvre and easy to hit,in a word versatile.1,2,& 3 irons are in comparison alot harder to control and hit.........why make a hard game even harder if there is something there to help you.

You sound like Freddielong, tell you what get back to your Persimmon and Balata next time your out.

Is it just that you fancy removing something other than posts/threads?

Ha ha could be worse he could sound like you and argue with everyone about nothing :D

I have to admit, never tried it out of the bunker!
You mention the versatility of the 3 iron, ever tried bump and runs up sloping greens? slicing and hooking round trees etc?
If you are in the rough, common sense says hit a club that will put you back in play, not the most optimistic one. I would never hit a 3 iron from the rough, on the same token, I have learned to take my medicine... most of the time.

Quick question, do many links members use hybrids?

Yes, my hybrid will do bump and runs, it also hooks and fades (High and low) although not always to order :(.

You would never hit a 3iron out of the rough.....BINGO!!! :D I might not necessarily hit my hybrid out of the rough either but it is there as a viable option if I so choose.

Yes and I can hit mine low, high, left to right, right to left, punched, floated etc etc but maybe that's cos I'm good. ;)

If by carrying a hybrid (enabling you to hit 200+ from the rough to go for greens otherwise out of reach) you could knock 2 shots off your h/cap, by not doing so are you sandbagging? Bandit perhaps? Protecting your h/cap?

Out of interest, like any club, you need to practice with it, or it will be inaccurate and unreliable.

I used to think like Brendy. I played blades (silly off a 12 h/cap), and disliked hybrids as being too 'game improvey'. Better off playing real golf with a bladed 3i. Then I got fed up with being in a similar lie to my partners, and seeing them spank a hybrid at the green from a lie I could only get a 7i to. So I gave in and got one, and realised what a berk I'd been for not having one for so long.

I see my game lacking from 100yds to around 30 yards out which is probably why I just dont get the reflex action to chuck a club in favour of the easy way. Remember, not all 3 irons are blades btw, take callaway for instance, their 3 irons are very easy to hit.
Dont get me started of Custom Fitting, imagine spending a great deal of time getitng measured and fitted for the perfect club only to throw half of them in the closet and whop out standard lie and loft hybrids.
I suppose my main gripe with them is that you have to learn to adapt to hit hybrids. The way I see it is that the difference between an 8 iron and 9 iron is pretty much the same difference between each iron in the bag so why do people resign themselves into thinking that hybrids are the way forward to replace perfectly good clubs in the bag. Like all things in golf it is all in the mind, teach yourself to love your FULL set of irons.

I like going for the green from 200 yards out of the crud. It's fun. It's more fun than chipping out sideways. And I'm rubbish at chipping out too.

Why are hybrids innaccurate?

Mine isn't.

I have been meditating on my nearly round of yesterday and even though I can see where the sensible option would have knocked a good few off the score, I have concluded that I am highly unlikely ever to choose the sensible option on a regular basis - going for it, though hugely risky, is so much more fun.

Risky is great when it works, I am a consumate pro at cursing my stupidity tough. Hence taking my medicine more often these days.
I could always find that little knitting needle width branch when there was a 20 foot window to steer the ball through. Now that is accuracy! :D

Easy way!!?? What a load of ballbag.

Good Luck out on Tour Brendy, you talk a hell of a game. :D

A lot of players do not (cannot?) hit longer irons hard enough to create the back spin necessary to keep the ball airborne. This gives them reduced carry, and hence a lack of distance. The hybrid gets the ball up without the need for fast club head speed.

This is my defence on the issue....and I'm sticking to it.

...teach yourself to love your FULL set of irons.

Full set of irons; my full set of irons starts at 25 degrees.

It seems to me that much of the desent regarding hybrid clubs comes from people who have previously bought a 'full set' from 19 degree iron down and are simply determined to stick to that formula.

This appears to be the form for any internet forum, people will tend to naturally defend that which they themselves have bought into regardless of evidence to the contrary. To do otherwise feels foolish.

I'm a complete rookie and have yet to break 100, but I have to say I hit my hybrids straighter than I do any of my other clubs. Personally I love them.

am caught between two stools here.....

on one hand - the sole purpose of rough/crud is to STOP you from ripping it 200 yards to the green - doesn't quite seem right to be able to (no real reward for keeping your drive on the short grass)

however.... even tho' to this point I would 100% have put myself firmly in the long iron camp - I did try one of those hybrids the other day, and kinda liked it :o

I've always been intruiged by them, and aren't against the necessarily, even though I love my long irons, but I've just not found one which is good to look at from address as of yet which has always put me off them and I've found I've never been able to be consistent with one.

I have a big gap between my 3 wood and 3 iron though and would like to fill it with a wood or a hybrid if I find one I can actually use.
