How well does your handicap travel?

My home track is short, a massive 5300 off the blocks which means that you don't really have to worry too much about having to blast it off the tee and during the summer the course shortens even more due to the additional run on the ball. This means I've found that whilst my official handicap is 13 and I can play round my course a lot lower on a going day I do find it tougher when I play away courses especially in comps.

I stick with my present course out of convenience and cost at the moment. Due to a young family I don't get to play as much as I used to (would like) and therefore cannot justify paying an increased membership for not much golf. It's also 5 mins down the road and a round should be sub 3.5hrs so I don't get too much grief from domestic management.

Does anyone else find that their handicap doesn't travel very well? Conversely do people from more demanding tracks find life easier when they head out to other courses?

My handicap of 14 doesn't travel too well away from home. Two reasons, my course is quite short, a little over 6000 and the 2nd reason is I am always crap away from home

Handicaps from ours tend to travel very well, despite being a shortish course (5700 off the tips). I went up 3 pretty much straight away after joining (very nearly spat my dummy out and left!!!) It's very easy to get out of position after which your staring bogeys in the face and if you leave your ball above the hole on certain greens a 3 putt is more than likely.

Quite well.

My course is always windy as on the coast and has many tight driving holes with OOBs on the right side.

Playing away means I can unleash my driver with less consequences and hit less punch shots under the wind.

Handicaps at my club travel very well.

Two courses 6400 yards each with lots of water and trouble.

Good indication is how well our club does in county comps, we also have taken in quite a few members from a local club due to closure most of the members are really ffinding the course hard with increases in handicap

Generally not well.....
Ours is a whisker over 6000 and pretty open and forgiving.
Get on a tree lined course and I'll struggle if I hit driver..
Handicap will probably rise next year with the move to Whipsnade. Much longer off the back tees, tighter and the greens are going to be faster.
Once I've got the hang of the place I reckon the handicap will travel better.

Whilst my home track isn't the longest it is very tight at times and also has small greens - so it has helped me keep my driving pretty good and also approach play , the greens improving ( getting quicker ) has also helped the putting so overall it has helped my handicap travel pretty well. Seem to be able to play to HC at most courses I have played

Not too badly, I wouldn't say our course is the longest but a lot of the greens are very tricky to hold unless you can zip the ball back. The new design will make it harder still with the inclusion of some devilishly placed fairway bunkers.

Not great, get into the bad habit of thinking you can drive the ball pretty much anywhere (and I do!), tend to struggle when travelling to tighter courses

Mine seems to travel pretty well. Quite a short course at 5700 yards but if out of position you get punished, also located on the coast and can be very windy. Greens are extremely quick during the summer and club selection is key. Miss the wrong side of the hole and you are not getting the ball anywhere near it with your next shot. They have actually had to rebuild 3 greens due to them being too quick and sloped that the ball just runs off the other side.

I've always thought mine travels well, although I do believe I concentrate more all the way around a new course whereas at my home course you know where you can take the odd risk and open the shoulders, but 9 times out of 10 it doesn't come off 😳

Far better than my old one at Wimbledon Common, which while very short and travelled like a poor Bulgarian wine. My current course is longer and a sterner test and I seem more competitive when I play club matches etc. That said I want my handicap far lower by this time next year so we'll see how it travels then

Ours is 6114 off the whites, Par 69 (SSS 70). Not sure if that means mine will travel well or not?

Ours travels well. 6,289 off the whites, par 70 sss 71. Tight and tree lined course where accuracy is rewarded.

Anytime I play a course which is open off the tees, I seem to play well.

I think mine travels pretty well. I'm usually pretty straight, although the length is waning, and my short game, especially putting isn't too shabby.

My course has a lot of water hazards across fairways where you often have to lay up, so on a course without such obstacles I tend to score better, where I do suffer is courses with deep bunkers as I don't have much experience of them.
