What's the best/cost effective way to set up a (no sound) recording device that'll record for 24hrs with pretty decent resolution? Some sort of Go Pro linked up to a laptop, a camcorder or some other type of equipment?

You can get PIR security lights with a inbuilt camera that records onto a SD card , you can set to either video or stills . Its only activated when motion is detected, .The lamp could be removed if you wished to make it just a camera.

Just Google security lights with camera, i think Amazon have them at around £95. . Easy to install.

There's plenty of options around, I think Maplins do one for about £100. My golf partner set one up indoors recently whilst he holidayed in India and could watch his living room on his iPhone, and any time that a motion is detected it would notify him immediately

Maybe your golf partner ought to relax a little more on holiday, move to a better neighbourhood, or stay at home....Seems a bit extreme to me, having to stalk your own living
room whilst on hols..

Or just maybe he had a reason that I didn't go into as it wasn't relevent on an open forum.

Can recommend the Foscam range of cameras. Can get all types for indoors and outdoors, night vision with pan / tilt features and wireless. You can access the cameras from a browser if you set it up as so (just make sure your password is strong).

Continuous recording will use a large amount of space. 5fps at, say, 20k per frame works out roughly at 100k per second, 6mb per minute, 360mb per hour, 8.5 Gb per day. Factor that against how long you want to store the footage for and you can see it tots up the storage pretty quickly! Of course, you can affect this by changing the quality, resolution and frame rate settings so suit your needs and storage limitations.

To my mind recording 24/7 is just a waste of space unless there is activity you want to capture happening ALL the time. Otherwise, recording on motion detection is the sensible option.

In terms of software I'd recommend recording to a Synology NAS and using Surveillance station. https://www.synology.com/en-us/surveillance/6.3/recording

I have a foscam fi8910w (bout £50 from Amazon) connected via my WLAN to my QNAP T110 NAS box. Don't really record but it has the features to do so and can fit what ever size disks you want. It can monitor loads of cameras (http://www.qnap.com/event/station/en-in/surveillance-station-s.php).

IP was going to be easier to setup that a proper coax unit, does the job and not too pricey.

We bought it to keep an eye on the rabbits in the garage whilst we were out to make sure they weren't fighting... when they were I could have a go at them through the mic and they'd stop lol
