How much would you pay................

........for a round of golf?

The latest Belfry thread got me thinking. How much would you pay for a weekly round, a society round, an occasional treat, and a once in a lifetime round on a 'named' course?

£20-25, £50, £60, £200+

If I wasn't in a club and wanted to play 40 weeks a year, I couldn't see myself getting much for my pony....

I'd have to justify the outlay with more regard to value than anything else.
I'd have loved to get up and play the Scottish Road trip but even playing 3 or 4 rounds its a hefty sum.
Adding into that the £500 a year subs and it makes "away" days even harder to get past the Finance Director.
I felt the 35 quid spent on both Forest of Arden and the PGA National this year were good value but looking at other courses, comparing them to those 2 and paying a similar amount does take some reconciling.
Either way, I'm fairly sure I wouldn't want to pay more then about £75 for a round, even at a top notch course. Unless it was part of a special occasion - playing the Old Course for my 50th or something...

lets compare it to Trout Fishing which is my other vice

Season ticket at a normal water is about £750 ish
so if you fish once a week is under £15 a week

Compare that to a normal day ticket at a top water Dever Springs / Avington etc at £65 per day

Compare that to Sutton Springs £140 for 4 fish 10Lb minimum weight

it actually works out to be pretty reasonable

£100 for a days golf on a cracking course, on an occasional basis, A treat to be saved up for,,,yes

but out of line with other sports ? .... NO

i shall take that bit of info and lock it away for a rainy day.
thanks for the hint bro

Of course my 50th is only 2 years away...hint

Weekly - about £25 (going rate for weekend pay and play near me)
Society - up to £60 including my food
Treat - about £75 depending on where it is and the treat involved
Once in a lifetime - £150 not sure I could really justify much more just for a game of golf given my current situation financially

I don't like playing courses on my 'wish list' during the winter when playing from the side of the fairways or from mats as it takes the shine off the occassion. I would pay up to £30 in winter though.

madandra, I couldn't agree with you more.

Weekly round I will try to limit it to about £25.00 if possible. Society day? Up to £65.00 if it's on a course I know is a good 'un. Rare treat? £100.00 for the day I guess. Once in a lifetime course? If I had the money, up to £150.00 but it would have to be somewhere very, very special to get me to part with that sort of money nowadays. And guaranteed sunshine... ;)

I dont really get much out of playing away from my own track. To me golf is golf and I doubt I would get much more pleasure playing elsewhere so I'll stay at home.

It cost me about £80 to play St. Mellion, and I'd happily pay it again for any course as good.

There's no way I'd spend over £200 on somewhere like Wentworth or Sunningdale though.

Sunningdale and Wentworth really aren't worth that sort of money and I'd rather pay one of the top Scottish or Irish courses for a fraction of the green fee.

Depends where you are in relation to the top scottish / irish courses.

Im in bucks and a trip to scotland and back would take £200 worth of petrol plus accommodation costs over and above the green fees

Not to mention 2 days off work for the travelling(self Employed)

makes the 40 minute drive to an expensive course such as Wentworth almost affordable

Having paid £75 to play a mediocre (being polite) course in Oslo a couple of months back, I would have no problems paying £75-100 quid for a round at a course back home... If I was at the top of my game, everything was perfect e.g weather, I would pay upto £300 for my one and only shot at St Andrews!!

I appreciate that you are just using these as examples so am not being critical. I think that a point worth making though is the difference between these two venues.

I play both these courses every year at no cost to me as it is through business connections. The point I would make in specific relation to these two is that Wentworth is certainly not worth the £250 or whatever they charge for lunch and 18 holes on the West Course. I am not a fan of Wentworth full stop as it feels too corporate and is really overpriced - just my opinion of course.

Sunningdale is a completely different matter though. It is probably the best collection of 36 holes in Europe and despite it's standing, still very much retains the "club" feel. For £180 (est) you get a superb lunch and two rounds on two fantastic courses. This may be expensive but it also represents very good value for money.

Other examples of courses I play quite often that are in the Sunningdale (expensive but good value) bracket are; Worplesdon, West Hill, Old Woking, Hankley Common, The Berkshire, Frilford Heath, St Georges Hill, Liphook, West Sussex, New Zealand and The Grove.

These are mostly in the Surrey Berkshire sand belt and their location affects the cost. All well worth the investment in my view though.

In answer to the original question, I wouldn't pay more than £150 for a round of golf but am happy to pay this if the course whilst costly, represents good value for money to me.

It is a personal thing though...
