How many holes on your course can you not reach in reg ?

All 18 are well within range from a reasonable drive. Even with the wind hurting, I'd still expect to reach with two good shots. I think we are about 6,800 yards off the whites.

We have 3 par 5's. I've got on all 3 in 2 at one time or another but you would need near perfect conditions with major wind assistance, to stand any chance. Under normal conditions they are all 3 shot GIR's.

Do I go for all of them all the time. Good drive, yes. Out of position, sometimes, depends on many factors.

Most of ours should be, but it doesn't always work out like that.

In Sunday's medal, I hit 5 out of 18, and that's poor, but still scored okay thanks to some deft chipping and putting. I only hit one fairway too, and had 32 putts for the round.

Not great stats but the truth was it was a good round of golf, so not sure how much faith to put in them. I'm logging the main stats for the next few months, so could be interesting.

What a daft thread! Don't think that there are many scratch golfers on here? So just look at your H/c and that tells you how many greens you can reach in regulation. Rather than what you wish you could reach.

Just play the shot thats needed, not the hollywood shot.

I'm not off scratch but can easily reach virtually every hole I've ever played in regulation.
Whether I'm acurate enough to hit them is another question altogether.

Short answer. 4 holes. Maybe only 3 depending on tee positions.

Long answer. 6 holes, but that's deliberate planning.

I wouldn't however consider that I'm 6 down (to par) before I start on the course. I nearly always get one par and sometimes two.

However, would I take 6 over for those 6 at the start of the medal round?.....yes, I probably would.
In matchplay? NO CHANCE. :)

That's just not the case. I play off 13 and can reach 16 in reg.

My point when starting the thread was to muse on the fact that even if I play 'perfect' scratch golf (GIR + 2 putts) the course effectively plays two shots harder for me because of my lack of length. I can live with that. If I was not getting to 4 or 5 then I might have to think about changing by game/bag (or golf club!) to take account of it. I was just curious how others found their own courses and what people might have done to address it.

. 428 yards I should be able to reach with a couple of good hits but sounds like I'd have the same issues as you with the hill.

Hills eh? What a pain they are.

Our S.I. 1 is only 420-ish, but I can never get over the brow of the hill. If I hit a 240, it comes out 220 max. The big boys that can hit 275 can get down there 300 easy. :)

I stand behind that green quite often on comp days enjoying my little seat in the sun enjoying a beer. (It plays back to the clubhouse). Watching the regular guys is depressing, they are coming in from 200-210 and invariably go in the hedge or pot bunker or OOB.

Watch the scratch team and they're hitting wedges loaded with backspin, over the bunker, screw back 5 foot - it's a birdie-fest.

Oh, how the other half live. :)

Oh, b.t.w. pendodave.....

I dreamed of playing "perfect golf" (taking into account my challenges :)) and I did it one day. Not at my course but at my old course.

5 holes I couldn't reach. 5 over par. Nice cut (off 9). BUT, I should have been better that day, I must have had 6 birdie chances.
I think I hit 11 in reg, had 2 up n downs and those five holes 2 putt bogeys.

I once hit all the front 9 in reg (at panshanger wgc for those who know it, it's not overly long for those who don't)

First par on the 9th.....

That's another thread I guess...

Our second is a real toughie for all of us. A Par 4 measuring 474yds off the back, with first 320yds or so uphill so for 99.9% of us our second shot is always blind - and it doglegs at the 'summit' - and then add in that we play it against the prevailing SW wind. I can get there wind helping and fairways running - but I can count on one hand (not using my thumb or all of my fingers either) the number of times I have been on the green in two this year (just as well my chipping and putting is pretty good). I always accept a 5 without too much disappointment.

There are 2 holes which without a decent tee shot you'll struggle to hit in GIR. One being our SI1, its only a 435yrd par 4 but you can either take a brave pill and bang a driver over the path, between the tall trees and the water either side of the landing spot or lay back with a iron and have a 230yrd shot in. I'll happlily walk off with a 5.
The second being our 16th SI4 405yrd Par4. It plays all up hill, with a bunker inrange for the longer drivers (Its the bunker I visit most on the whole course). You have to hit the fairway along side this bunker to stand a chance of going for the green (which is raised and has a bunker to the right and fall off areas front and left.
Its give and take though as I can hit 2 of the par5's in two with a good drive and a long iron.

I've managed it regulation once after a well struck 5 wood crept on the front. I normally lay up with my second shot to make sure I can pitch from the fairway for my third.

come on Si. man up, How else do you expect to match the glorious 6 I took there on Sunday !!!;):D

back to the OP they are all in range wind/drive dependent. Against the wind the hole above is out of range even with a decent drive. Apart from that I'd fancy a crack at all of them

I hit that hole in two about twice in 20 years of being a member.:(

None of the holes are over long at Blackmoor. Couple of 200 yard par 3's that can play long, but the only really long hole is the 10th at 440 yards, which needs a good drive to be able to reach an elevated green. Calvin, TXL's son managed to hit it with a wedge second shot twice in one day.

Crikey, probably most of them. I rarely reach any of the par 4's in reg and tbh I can count on one hand how many times I have since becoming a member in May. I definitely cannot reach the greens on our 2nd, 7th, 11th, 12th, 14th, 16th, 17th even though it is a short course (Chartridge Park). I should be able to reach the 17th in theory but for some reason my ability crashes through the floor as soon as I tee up on the 17th and I'm happy to be putting with the same ball I tee'd off with.

We have 8 long par 4's at my course, all over 400 yards and most by some way. I reach them all in regulation, but only after a decent drive. If the drive is not a good one, iron and a pitch or chip is the order of the day.

To make things worse, the normal wind direction is against you on 6 of those par 4s. :0(
