There's a few reasons for us which I won't go into on here. One I will though is that it's no longer value for money for us.

When it comes down to the nuts and bolts of it that’s the biggest thing for anyone in my opinion.

Yes clubs are pricing themselves out of reach for some people.
Golfers are questioning the value for money.
They have to be careful or they will lose members .
Moneys tight atm.

Affordability isn't the issue for us but I know it will be for others like you say at plenty of clubs.

Been a nomad for a while now, just don't play enough in the winter. Quite enjoy playing somewhere different through the summer every week and IGolf keeps the handicap up to date. Doubt I'll join anywhere ever agin.

We haven't regretted it at all. Seeing £90 going out every month as the course was either under water, closed for frost or just not enough light was quite annoying.

Only been a member of one club.
I originally joined in 2019 but have had 2 18 month breaks during that time, I'm leaving again at the end of December but this time for good.

Been here for about 22 years, the only thing that would make me likely to leave would be a house move as I like the place and it's very convenient.
Folk are friendly.
I can walk to and from it for social events if I'm having a drink .

Been at Canterbury around 11 years, with a sabbatical year at Chestfield whilst I worked out if I was able to play after surgery.
Prior to that :
3 years at Shooters Hill (Left due to change of Job location).
10 years at Redlibbets (Left due to poor course condition).
5 years at Dartford (Left due to hose move).

I’m pretty much word for word as above (though lot of work currently being done on presentation due to focus on more significant works last few years).
22yrs at Farnham following an 8 yr break from club membership when we moved from Bristol and children were little and money was v tight. In Bristol was 12yrs at Filton.
Farnham is a superb and progressive members club and I am very comfortable there. Besides…as my daughter is engaged to the Head Pro…well…
On cost front…yes it is expensive but no more than most similar members clubs in the Surrey/Hants/Berks borders area…and besides…being a member of a golf club is just part of who I am - and a v important part at that. I count myself very fortunate indeed.

I’ve been at ours for over 20 years now. Prior to that I had been at three clubs, with a lengthy gap after the first as I didn’t play for several years.
I have often thought about moving on, primarily because we do have issues with conditioning of the course at times. But the positives outweigh the negatives. It’s playable all year, the greens are generally pretty good, surprisingly so in winter, our roll up gets peak early morning tee times on non competition days, and I have lots of mates there. In addition, living in perhaps the worst county in the country for top quality clubs, the alternative options are limited.
Unless there is ever an exodus of friends, I can’t see me moving any time soon.

A few of our very low handicap players have gone for the PMG (play more golf) scheme.
They miss out on voting rights, playing in club team matches, the club championship and all board comps, as they are not full members.
They are still full members of the county and can be selected for county teams, play in county championship, 72-hole scratch spring tournament and any opens they fancy.
They play a lot of our weekly medal comps.
All report to be enjoying their golf and saving £hundreds. They don't miss the net board comps in any way.
I expect their small number to be growing next year.

Next season we are going back to the old one as we still have friends there that never moved. Reason for leaving was we felt the greens had been getting poorer for a few years but it seemed like they had their head in the sand and didn't want to address it until they had quite a few leave that year. They have really worked at them and are in much better condition now. Current place suffered during the summer with the greens but that's not the reason for moving, the greens right now are excellent. If I played more golf I'd be very tempted to join both.
I know I'm definitely going to miss my current place this time next year when it's open, fairways on, main greens on etc and the place we are going to will be shut, just like last weekend.

Been at my current place (Stoneleigh) for 5 years, this will be my last year. Was previously at Leamington from 14-17, then had a gap when the first child was born. I'm going to move to Kenilworth (hopefully). I just wanna go back to a members club, and the practice facilities at Kenilworth really suit me.

I can't help feel your expectations of a golf course in England are a little low. Unless you are playing mini golf, the game is played on grass in the UK.
