Handicaps do not lapse and remain valid as long as the player is a member of an affiliated club or independent golfer scheme. If there is a gap in membership, the HI immediately becomes valid again on (re-)joining an affiliated club/scheme (by retrieving the handicap record using the WHS ID/CDH number).

However, players holding a handicap have several responsibilities, including to submit acceptable scores as evidence of their demonstrated ability. There is no requirement for any of them to be competition scores. Handicap committees may suspend the handicap of a player who doesn't meet their responsibilities for a period of time, e.g. pending the entry of sufficient scores to assess whether the players HI is reasonable, especially if the player is looking to play in competitions.
