Lets say, for clarity's sake, that you have a slight tail wind in your favour, the ground is hard and you catch it full & nice.....how far would you expect your 7 iron to fly?

I dont know if anyone else saw it, but at the TPC last night, Tiger hit a 7 iron 225yds into the 16th green

In the same conditions, I reckon I can get mine about 165 - 170yds tops.....50+yds short of Tiger

with a slight tail wind, perhaps 160-170, on a good day.

Factor in the stronger lofts the Pro's probably use too, but its still a long way :D

This is one of the big problems in comparing how far we hit to how far they hit.
They play a different game to us so trying to make comparisons is hopeless. They have to hit a 7 iron that far because they're playing on 7500 yard courses compared to our 6500.
When I see the "What's in the bag?" sections in mags I know I can move every club at least 1 sometimes 2 down the order. So Kim hits a driver 300 and a 3 wood 260 and a 5 wood 230 - well to me thats adriver 260, a 3 wood 230 etc etc.
And it comes down to how many it takes to get you in the hole not really how far you hit it.

Oh and about 160-170 with the roll.........

I'd love to be able hit it 200+yds but my average would be 170yds give or take a couple yds.

These pros make every shot look easy though

The pros use weaker lofted irons, check out any 'players' irons compared to 'game improvement' and you will notice the difference.

I hit my 7 iron 100 yards at Lydd and about 170 at my nice tree lined Surrey track.

A better question would be, "How far would you expect to carry a 7I shot in completely calm conditions", because what is a "slight tailwind"?

Third hole at my local club is 157 yards. Bit of a bowl area infront of the green, with a deepish bunker right along the front, and a narrow, but wide green. I generally take a 7I, but with a slight tailwind once I took an 8I and carried it about 20 yards over the green! Yesterday with a slight headwind I creamed a 6I and landed it several yards short, in the bunker.

A lot of things depend on getting good distance, Ive hit a 7i full 100 yards into a wind and over 200 with a tail wind, it really does depend.
