How do I regain my enthusiasm for golf?

Truly love the game but just can't seem to find any enthusiasm lately - any suggestions welcome - thanks - GBC

Why not go on a golfing holiday if you have the time and can get away, if not why not have a course of lessons and it will give you the push you need to get down to the course practicing again.

Ban yourself for 6 weeks and promise to get the garden tidy, bedrooms repainted and garage cleared.
Then see how long it takes 'till you're gagging to get in the course.

What type of golf do you play as in is it competitive, a knock around with mates, out of an evening on your own or a mixture of all 3...

If it's a mixture of all 3 and your not enjoying any of it then you've got problems, if it's just one of the options say for instance 'out of an evening on your own' then you need to find someone to knock around with, I quite enjoy a knock around on my own in fact I went out today and played 11 holes, followed a slow four ball from the 4th but didn't mind one bit as the whole object was sit back, relax, enjoy the scenery and whack a few balls whilst I was at it but I couldn't do it all the time 'that would get exceptionally boring after a while' lucky for me I have a mate or 2 that tag along sometimes, as for the competitive option well I don't do it so it'll not effect me but if it's comps you find a chore then I'd suggest you ditch it for a while, only play in the odd one just to keep your HC up, I know people who play comps 2/3 times a week and they never seem to enjoy it...

Get 3 of your best mates and go and play fall over matchplay. Played in pairs, whichever pair wins a hole has to take a slug from the hip flask. Prey for lots of halved holes. The pair that doesn't fall over wins.

Go for a walk on the course in the evening when no one else is out there, without a club or maybe just a wedge or a putter and a ball. Give yourself time to think about all the things you enjoy about the game. Take in all the nice things around you, the trees, the green grass, the lovely light, think about how you would play it if you were playing well and maybe have a chip or a putt on a few greens.

Go shopping with the misses, or play golf, what ever makes you happy.:D
Oooh yes....
Shoe shopping for hours is always a good one.

Lose the will to live every time by the third shop. But you absolutely know that:
A) You've got every other shoe retailer in town to visit still.
B) You're going back to one of the first two anyway because the choice has already been made - she's just making sure there's nothing better out there.

I mean - Mrs Backsknackered only ever buys shoes in three shops coz she knows the quality and that they come up comfortable.
But she ALWAYS looks everywhere. She's even seen ones she would buy but then doesn't because she doesn't like the build quality. THEN WHY ARE WE IN THE BLOODY SHOP TRYING THEIR SHOES ON THEN???

Yup, give me that over golf every time.
😨😨😨

I go through spells like this. I tend to get bored easy so need to change things up every so often.

I either stop playing for a bit. I once took a 3 month break and honestly thought I was done with the game, but I came back.

or

Change something. Play at a different time, stop playing 18 and only play 9 for a while. Play some different courses. Play with some different people. Don't keep score and just hit the ball. Stop using technology (DMD, Game Golf, Range Finders etc). All things I've tried and worked at onetime or another.

Sounds like someone has been watching Bagger Vance

I've been through a similar patch. I've kind of plateaued and am frustrated I'm not improving, then I realise I'm not really practicing, other than the driving range say once a week and one lesson every 6 or so weeks. It's no substitute for playing.
When I get chance to play, I am just trying to relax and come to terms with the fact that I play as a hobby, a release if you like and the last thing I need is to make my life more stressful.
I'm just remembering the good shots and forgetting the bad: we all hit bad shots and remember we play because we enjoy it....

treat yourself and go and play an exceptional course that you haven't played before and hopefully do it in nice weather!

My enthusiasm is gained by sitting in an office staring outside thinking about how I could be playing golf :D

I am done, finished, thinking about what the next thing might be. I just cant get interested in getting changed and heading to the club. Considering dropping my membership but I have been here before so I am just letting some time pass to see if I get back the enthusiasm.

Get on ebay and find yourself an old set of clubs.

Preferably 1970s or earlier, bladed irons, wooden woods, primitive putter.
The game takes on a new challenge.
It's done wonders for my enthusiasm during a tough spell.

One thing I always find I do when on a course is "empty my mind" (stop sniggering in the NW).

No matter what travails life throws at me, on a golf course, it is rarely in my mind. I also love the banter, catching up with mates, winning/losing a pound or 3, and being outdoors with friends is always good.

If you don't get any of the above, or other similar benefits, then maybe it is time to leave it. If you get obsessed with scoring, you are on a sticky wicket. someone once said to me that you'll probably only have 3-4 "great" rounds a year, so you better learn to enjoy the rest. Only you will know.

As others have said, take a break then come back to it. I've taken wee breaks before I usually only last a week before I really want to get back to golf. I love playing in competitions and I've started setting my self goals this year, and have re-evaluated them as the season has gone on, this has kept me motivated and the challenge of trying to drop my handicap is really enjoyable, I just need the results to actually drop it.
