Recommend your "hidden gems" within c.50 miles of Leeds / York

Hardly a hidden gem
Well I'd never heard of it being a super duper place to go to. No one on here ever mentioned it, it's not top 100 or 200 course, to my knowledge. I found it by chance doing research for our lads golf trip. So , in my eyes, counts as hidden gem. :):)

One of the county’s finest

Open Champions Sandy Herd and the revered course architect James Braid were behind the design of what is regarded one of the county’s finest golf courses, highly praised by the internationally renowned golfing stars Lee Westwood and our very own Danny Willett.

Very interesting thread, and I was astonished that Shipley Northcliffe gets a mention. I would have thought Bingley St Ives and Shipley (Beckfoot) would be on the list.
If I was to recommend a course round Bradford/Leeds, I think it would be Headingley. Don't go to Halifax Ogden with out a close look at the weather forecast!! On a fine day it is truly exhilarating. On a bad day, you'll be pining for the Clubhouse.

Thanks all for the further suggestions.

Going with a short list of the following to start with:

Bondhay
Cavendish
Worksop
Ripon
Skipton
Crossland Heath
Halifax West End

I fancy Beverley but my PP doesn't do quirky! We need to have a conversation about that one !

Think I might also try squeeze in Forest Pines. Must be 15 years since I played there.

Right, off to see what Golf Empire can deliver.
Playing Crossland Heath on Thursday so will report back.

Forecast looks good, light winds and sunshine all day.

Looks like you've picked aa great day. Views are cracking up there, and you might even have a few aircraft taking off from Huddersfield International Airport just across the road...

Hopefully Clarkson isn't there testing jet engines 🤣

Hope I don't see him!

Yes, it was either Wednesday or Thursday so decided on Thursday based on the forecast. I rang today and they're fully open, optional fairway mats and the pro said it's in cracking condition considering the weather. Looking forward/scared 😂 First game since September!

I'm sure you'll enjoy it - it's just a bit too far from my house to get in the membership equation but the course is great, clubhouse has been updated, and the members seem a good bunch.

It's 45 minutes from me. Possibly one of the driest around, I've heard. It's my birthday, £30, I've got the day off so we'll enjoy it however it goes.

Crossland Heath. Enjoy it? Absolutely loved it. What a course. It was in better condition now than a lot of summer courses I've played. This is up there with the best course I've played. The variation of holes is great. The par 3's are pretty special too.

I can't think of a bad thing to say about it. Got chatting to a member whilst having a putt. He said we'd enjoy it and spoke about how the greens have been improved since the new head greenkeeper has been there and he wasn't wrong. Immaculate. Absolutely pristine.

£30 now is absolute bargain. Granted it'll be more in the summer but I'd imagine it will be worth it.

The views are unbelievable too. We grabbed some food in the clubhouse after and that was decent too.

All in all a really good birthday.

We had a golfing trip last summer, staying in Bridlington
We played Driffield golf club on the way down, everyone enjoyed it, I'd happily play it again👍
It's not an area that gets talked about much as somewhere to go for golf so it's good to hear a recommendation for it. Log that one away for another time 👍

Thanks all for the contributions to this thread. Have just spent a couple of days researching your suggestions and booking our Spring\Summer away days.

Mostly Opens with the most expensive round coming in at £40.

The current confirmed bookings are:

Holme Hall
Crossland Heath
Cavendish
Market Rasen
Bondhay
Bedale
Worksop
Woolley Park
Sickleholme
Seaton Carew

Really looking forward to all of them.

Might add a couple more before I finish.

Thanks once again.

Kilnwick Percy is nice enough.

Easingwold was always a great track but haven't been in many a year.

Not overly keen on KP. Clubhouse however would grace any course. Do they still have the daft par 3 that you have to walk back the entire length of to play the next?

Easingwold is a lovely track once you get past the first 3 or 4 holes which are a just up and down and bland. Rest of it reminds me a bit of Fulford- without the hefty
price tag.

In agreement with the bold...... AND whoever goes to Ogden is rolling the dice.

Have checked back & just can't believe that, though not really a hidden gem, we've not at least given a passing mention to Fixby... Huddersfield GC.... as good as anything in N Leeds or even the County!!

The youth has been up there today, in fantastic condition - it's several levels above anything else in the local area. Open's are £85 to enter though, so not cheap - but it's building it's reputation and as DPWT Q school venue, they're probably justified in charging that amount.

Thankfully the members guest rate is a more palatable 30 quid.. ;)
