How confident are you from 50 yds?

10 shots, I'd say 9 on the green, with 1 shanked, long or duffed. Of those 9, probably 1 within 6 ft, 3-4 within 15 ft, the rest dotted around.

if you massivley struggle with the 50 yard shot, actually your chipping and pitching in general, I would strongly recommend watching a youtube video by David Leadbetter - I think it is called 'secrets of the short game' or something.
Easy to follow, easy to repeat and produces the goods.

I would expect to hit the green with all 10 shots - would hope to have a couple maybe 3 within 6 feet but to have limited amount of disparity!

I understand the distinction you are making between on course and 10 in a row. I remain dubious, 6ft from 50 yards is a very small area to hit. 50 yards is quite a way from the green.

If Mike Gardiner and Alan Smyth are still about Filton (I can't imagine Alan ever not) ask them about a long long putt I did on Barn in an Anon semi they played against Mike and Hugh :) Might give you an inclining on why I might be looking 50-75% out of 10 for short game stuff ;) Confidence in your ability on short stuff and being able to picture shots in your mind is crucial. And you don't forget how to imagine - you've got to learn first.

Actually not so hot these days :(

They are also...

A) used to the greens
B) Practice a lot
C) Supremely talented

Frankly, I find the fact that people think they could out-perform the pros with their short game quite laughable.

If we're talking 10 balls from 50 yards in practice I reckon I might get 2 within 6 feet. On the course less than that.
I agree with this if it was me maybe 1 or 2 and maybe none, 6ft from 50 yards is great golf some might think they are better than they actually are.

I agree that reality vs expectation would differ massively and there will be many of us out there thinking we could knock everything close but I don't think we are comparing ourselves with the pro's here or claiming we are better.

the only reason I say this is;
In this example we have been asked how many we could get to within 6 foot when we have a perfect lie, on the fairway to a flat green with no obstacles, no wind, nothing to affect anything other than hitting your best.

Whereas the professionals have varying lies, conditions, wind, greens and are playing for a bucket load of cash.

I think it is a case of apples and oranges here.
But I do agree that we are probably all victims of significant self-belief!

Here's another way of looking at it. If I built some walls around the hole Bob described above, one at each side and one at the back, 4yds long, with the hole in the middle of them, and gave you 10 shots from 50 yards. Are people really telling me that they could get nearly 50% into the square, without hitting any of the sides?

I reckon it would be harder than you think, even with 10 shots one after the other.

Self belief is a good place to start. Self belief comes from knowing what you can do, not what you think or hope you ca do.

If you're referring to some who are kidding themselves on, then that’s not self belief. Just my opinion.

Fair point but I guess that is just a difference in our definition of self belief which veers away from the original point.
But, I take your point.

If I am kidding myself, I would hit 10 out of 10 within 6 foot, of which half would be inside 3 and half again would hole out from 50 yards.
If I was using my self-belied - all would be on the green with 2 or 3 inside 6-8 feet
If I was honest, I would be delighted with 1 inside 6 feet and would be expecting the rest to be on the green but could expect to miss on occasion.
