How close for a Gimme?

And that's fine by me too. My attitude is that if I don't think it's one I'll tap in 100% of the time it's not a gimme. If my opponent gives me one of those - bonus; if she doesn't give me one I think is a gimme - no problem I can just knock it in.

This sums it up. If you don't fancy holing out then it's not a gimme. If you don't care because you'll never miss in 1000 goes then why worry about having to knock it in if it's not given.

In social golf I'm ok with up to a couple of feet if it's straight.

I also don't go with the 'tactical' giving of putts to make it harder later on.
If I've not had any and you give me a 3 footer I'm going to hit it anyway for the practice.
The extra importance of the match later on will add enough extra pressure by itself without trying to 'ice the kicker'.

I have often given a putt of a foot and they player acknowledges and goes and hits it anyway, sometimes hitting the ball towards them if they overhit the previous putt, if you know what I mean. What happens then, or can it just be classed then as a practice putt or collecting the ball?

I didn't see this before I posted.

Matchplay or Strokeplay, you can practice after the hole is finished providing you're not holding up play behind.

Whats a gimme? lol

In matchplay my 2 year old has to be able to make it before I'd give it, in practice or with friends out for fun, then if it is inside a couple feet without break, then its ok.
If you ask for it, you have to hole it!!

We've all missed tiddlers in the past... so why would you give that opportunity away with the gimme in matchplay?

Anything insdie 12 inches I'll give, but I've seen plenty of 2-footers missed in the past so will always see those in. I judge people by my own iffy standards on short ones, I'm afraid.

If the pins cut on a slope , on a slippery green and is not a midges d1ck away i'm seeing it in all day long :):):)

A putt that is within about 8 inches is fine. More than that, you're putting. I have seen a 1 inch putt missed though. At my club too.

If you have to ask then you don't get. Just tells me you're not confident about making it. It has to be within a matter of inches on a Saturday to be considered in our roll up and even then usually begrudginly. I like the element of the gimme in matchplay and just expect to hole everything until I'm told to pick it up

In a matchplay game I find golfers are relatively generous for the first few holes before becoming quite stingy. On the last however they become quite generous again unless its the decider!

I won mine when we both had 3 footers. He missed, I holed :D

If if was the other way around he said he would have made me putt too as mine was harder! His was straight and mine was left to right by a good few inches!
