How close for a Gimme?

My social playing group has always reckoned on a gimme being up to about 12". But now we tend to say if it's close enough for a gimme it's close enough to putt out, so we do!

I dont like to play with gimmes and at Wynyard today with two friends playing a £1 £1 £1 (normal form) all 3 of us rounded on the fact that in golf the game is tee to hole, particular at the start of the season when you go from a mallet to a putt from winters to greens. For me it ruins the game and edge that is developed when you can 'can' a long one and then are expected to give a 'charity point'. No one clubs down and asks for 30 yards off the tee - drop the putt and mark your card!!!

me and my usual playing partner make each other hole everything unless they are on the hole edge. we know small ones can be missed and it usually adds the the excitment and tension when they games are tight.

exactly- if they are close enough to give then just stick it in.

It depends on the context of the putt to me. In a friendly I will give it if its inside a putter grip (No long putters)

I expect someone to putt out a birdy or better, or the shot that wins the hole.

Easy, never give them and you won't ever fall out with one of your other playing partners for giving one.

One of our sweep three putted from 1/2" today in a medal. Rolled the ball up to said 1/2" waited for it to fall in (It never) walked up to knock it in, knocked it to hard and it bounced over the hole then missed the return. Whoops!!!!

What is and what isn't a gimme only ever causes problems in my experience. I putt everything even when told I can "have it"

I've read this a few times on this thread, how do the players giving the gimmies, react to this apparent slap in the face? Is it ever perceived as an insult to them that you wouldn't accept their offer?

I do not agree with what length should constitute a gimme. You could have a straight uphill put from from 5 foot, compared to a 2 foot downhill putt with a 6 inch left to right break. Playing against a scratch golfer that is a demon with the putter compared to a 28 handicap beginner would have a huge influence on what would be given. Is it a friendly game or is it the club summer knock-out? Has your opponent been generous with gimme's so far?

So to sum it up it's the putt not the distance, how good is your opponent with the flat blade, what is the situation of the game, has your opponent been generous in giving you putts?

Normally for me a gimme is anything withIn putter grip but some people say within the putter length. I say crack on I then produce my belly putter and there views soon change.

I cant remember who said it, but was a pro on TV (long time ago) he said "unless you can touch the flag with your tongue when taking you stance, its not a gimme"

But got to say less than 18 inches is fine with me, unless its my brother then I make him put out, seen him 3 putt from less than 18 inches
