Just the one for me and it was on a hole I had never played before which made it even more random.

None. Hit a few pins. A few which ended up within a foot or so. But sadly no ace. Yet.

Was playing a round with my dad when he got his - that was special for sure

I played with a guy at my place who’s had a dozen. He had one the other winter when I played with him, and he barely cared about it, it’s just another eagle to him...I could have punched him there and then ?

Funny some should say they wouldn’t buy drinks.

So here’s an interesting one, no names named but when we (B Team, Scratch league) lost a match 5.5 to 0.5 the opposing team won the league that day. It was at their home course. By the time the last matches were coming in it was long sown up, some of our guys went home it was a long way from us. About 3 or 4 of us were hanging on for the last group to come in.

One of their guys in an early group had a hole in one in the match. He had a tray of shots delivered to the table and...

Didn’t offer our team any.

Okay or not okay?

Anyone there still should have been offered a dram

Not okay

A yes - one - though I was out by myself playing a handful of holes one evening and nobody other than myself and the ‘big man upstairs’ saw it. But OP didn’t set any contexts or conditions on the question.

100% OK if he doesn't want to, or 100% OK to buy everyone in sight drinks all day long if he wants to.

Man hits ball... Ball goes into hole...
Woopy doo, why should someone be obliged to fork out and buy strangers a drink for some random occurrence?

We were visiting opponents in a match. It isn’t even like he could have sour grapes they’d won he match and league. I felt it was disrespectful.

No not OK. Don't understand why someone would do that. Either buy for everyone or not at all.

Because it's completely his choice.
It wasn't a Seniors Friendly happy clappy, it was a competitive scratch match.

I don't understand why someone should feel forced to buy drinks for people they don't know.
I agree with you but as Curls said, why bring over a tray of drinks just for his mates. Seems odd (and a bit disrespectful) to me ?

How many clubs have something set up to “protect” someone who gets a hole in one?

I’ve always understood it to be one of those things where you get everyone a drink, though don’t know why is started.

I have heard of some clubs having a fund for it to cover the cost, or where they sell a bottle at cost so it can be left on the bar for everyone to have a glass/shot.

If they've just played a match against each other I'd like to think that they did know each other to some degree, or maybe as it was a scratch match they didn't talk to each other.

If they were sitting on the same table it's a bit off I agree.

Don't get me wrong, it's a nice tradition and guys are normally so over the moon that they love getting a bottle in for the clubhouse.

I'm just not a fan of being forced into it ?

We were, and the tray wasn’t emptied
first time around so he went round again blanking us a second time. Scratch B league isn’t quite as standoffish as A in my experience, everyone takes it seriously but the players generally get on. I realise that’s not how A works.

Anyway those are specifics you didn’t know. I look forward to our next match there ?
