My equipment cost over 1k but every single piece of it is suitable for my high handicap. Why should I spend less if I choose not too?. Surely anyone who buys a major brand and buys new would spend in excess of £500 on equipment. You should spend what you feel comfortable in spending at the end of the day and sod anyone who criticises you for it.

If you can afford it - fill yer boots.
If you can't you can still find decent equipment at a reasonable cost.
I would always advise to buy the best you can afford.
Don't really understand all the "snob" bits - maybe I didn't read them fully.
But either way, I think quality clubs will help you play better, whatever your level.
with ref to the "snobs" no matter how much we would like to think snobbery had gone from the game i'm sorry to say it is alive and kicking from the cat1 who will not play with cat3 players or the private members club player who looks down on someone who plays at a muni,to the loud mouth who tells everyone he meets that he is a member of the golf club thinking this gives a better status than them or the 20 h/c who looks down on the juniors in front for slowing him down or the struts his stuff peacock who has everything the glossy golf mag advertise and looks down on everyone else for daring to turn up for a game in dunlop clothes, all of us like it or not fall into one or more of these groups snobbery gone from the game not yet and it probably never will.

Relax yourself fella.

This is not just in golf, this is life.

Don't worry yourself so much about it.

Free your mind and swing easy, I guarantee you that you wont be a 20+ handicapper for long who has all the gear and no idea!

;)

could you tell me why you don't list yours? ;)
i never thought about it before, but i cant see the point you don't go round the course telling everyone you play with or stood in the car park what clubs you have but as i have posted before i play with ping and have done for years i have a standard set up and just the loft and lie altered i use the 13,s now and a burner 2 driver with standard shaft i have a ping craze putter and snake eye wedges i have a white power caddy bag and trolley i wear ecco shoes and stromberg pants under armour shirts gg all weathers use z star balls get the picture boring isn't it and has that made any difference to the topic ps getting fitted for i20s next week and complete set of woods.

I listed clubs that I originally purchased just to get back into the groove, I was excited to get back into golf after a few years.

Now I am back in the groove the buzz is more than ever but I have been tinkering with shafts and different lofts of clubs so I took it all down as it wasn't accurate due to me testing stuff out.

I did it originally as lots seemed to do it and I was excited about golf and talking about it.

I won't post up the clubs again as i'm not that fussed on doing it to be honest.

Bug has got me good. Mature head now instead of when I was a junior trying to smash the ball into outer space.

Sorry but I think the OP is a million miles off beam. For me, a newbie should get a course of 6 lessosn and use whatever clubs he can afford or borrow. Once he has the basics of a swing then he can look at getting a full set. If you are looking at any of the big names, even for GI and not even the top of the range drivers or putter you will be close to £1,000

For arguments sake

7 irons - £500 (4-PW)
SW - 70
Driver (mid range) -£150
3 and 5 wood - £120 x 2 = £240
Hybrid - £120
Putter (mid range) - £80

Total = 1160

That is being conservative and not the "all the gear no idea" premise the OP makes. Personally I have no issue with what the next man wants to spend and if he is happy then fine. It seems the OP is thoe only one on here showing any kind of gear snobbery

you answered my question perfectly,"they should get 6 lessons and use what ever clubs they can afford or borrow" this is what my argument is all about if you had read original post,as opposed to a newbie never having swung a club going out and buying all the latest top end stuff snobbery no just an observation, and can you say hand on heart that golf is not a game for snobs.

Stand around a senior's group before they go out and marvel at the selection of clubs/bags/trollies/dress. We could'nt care tuppence.
Played last year in a senior's match against a player who parked his Tesla american all electric sports car, costs a shed load of money but played with a set of all sorts which survived the flood. He played a good solid game off a medium HC. He's rumoured to be the second richest man in Berkshire.
