Out of the blue yesterday I started shanking :( Never done it before and it was just affecting my wedges, nothing else.

Any advise from you nice people?

Check your set up, I hit a few last year and i thought i was opening my stance to hit pitch shots, but I was actually set up all wrong, the pro I was getting lessons with saw me on the range and pointed me in the right direction, got me set up square and then opened my stance so the club came through correctly and not too close to the body.

I had a lesson and have not done it since. I was taking the club too far back on the inside. Try and keep the club going back in a straight line for as long as possible this will widen your swing and also give a steeper angle of attack thus letting you hit higher as well. Put a ball behind the one you are going to hit about 12" away and make sure the clubhead goes over that ball on the takeaway then just finish the swing as normal.

Ground the club slightly on the toe, with the heel of the club slightly raised, with hands slightly more upright than usual. Address the ball nearer the toe as well.

'Crap' and 'Murph' are offering remedies to different reasons for this ailment, in my opinion.

If, like me, you have suffered over the years with this, maybe just once in a round - but this once steals away your confidence for the rest of the round, you start to realise that this is the golfing Gods working against you!!

Why?

Because sometimes it is the toe of the club catching the turf and turning the clubhead round, as happened to me on Saturday or the ball being hit from the heel of the clubface, where the face joins the shaft and shooting off at right angles.

Now I go with 'Crap' on this subject, I stand further from the ball at address, lower my hands and swing the clubhead more upright, over that imaginery ball, referred to above.

Now this setup is at odds with my natural stance, being tall I stand closer to the ball, more upright and every so often I forget the dreaded problem and wander back to this stance, catch the toe and spoil my enjoyment for the day.

It is also in the head as I did this on the same shot at the same hole every week!! Unfortunately it was the first hole and it impacted on my handicap - that and bad putting.
This year has not seen a repeat at that hole so here's hoping that one, at least, has been put to bed!!

I just change my swing thought and concentrate on the plane of the shaft not the head, I aim to swing the shaft inside the ball and the head will take care of itself -works for me.

Two things helped me get rid of the Shermans when I got the disease.
1: Make sure your weight is on the balls of your feet not your toes otherwise you tend to throw the club out and that's when the neck of the club contacts the ball. (a good way to practice that is to put a ball under the toes of your shoes)

2: Actually try to hit the ball with the toe of the club. This worked best for me as it forced me to approach the ball from the inside.

Anyway - worth a shot - hope they help! :D

I will cure anyone with this simple drill...

address the ball with the ball behind the hosel of the club...so you have the ball beetween you and the club and off you go...you WILL NOT shank.
