Hello everyone....

Great site and forum. I've been loitering for a while and finally decided to post.

My names Roper and I'm in the Merseyside area.

I've watched golf and fancied playing for a number of years, but always put it off through fear of embarrassing myself. My friends have all played since we were kids, or teenagers and it kind of passed me by as I played football.

I got a set of clubs to start off last October [Wilson X31's - starter set] and I was doing little more than "dipping my toe in the water" going to the driving range every few weeks, and getting nowhere with it.

In August I decided enough was enough and I booked lessons with a pro and have done 6 so far and played my first round in late August and have played 7/8 times since. I have well and truly been bitten by the bug.

I've made decent improvement in my lessons and Im happy I'm going in the right direction. The basics are coming along [grip, posture, stance], and I just need to work on getting it as a "muscle memory" and smooth things out.

Is it normal for huge improvements at first and then lots of lows as you try to tweak one thing and it alters another?

I'm 6 foot 3 inches tall and had my club shafts extended by an inch at the advice of the pro and Ive had them regripped with mid sized golf prides.

I'm finding that at the moment, my swing feels a bit "all over the place". Its not consistent and the speed and rhythm is inconsistent and can go from feeling OK, to feeling totally alien.

The last couple of rounds that I've played have been in damp conditions after a day or so rain and its been tough. I find I am miss hitting the ball a lot and its going low as though im hitting the ball with the sole of the club and lifting my head too soon.

I also stuggle with woods. That said, I've not done a great deal of work with woods in my lessons as yet. But when I use them I have a terrible slice that is inconsistent. Sometimes it will go straight with a slight fade right, the next it will fly off at 2 o'clock and into the trees. I cannot plan, as its all over the place.

I guess my main question is......Is this all normal?
How long will it take before I am able to play a bit more consistently? [I understand golf is a game where you always need to 'stay on top of your game'] but as a rule, how long before I am consistent 8/9 out of 10 shots.

What are things I need to sort/learn sooner rather than later to help me?

Sorry to pepper you all with so much.....but I thought i'd try and give you an idea of where I am at the minute.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome and enjoy.

Yes it all sounds fairly normal and I still am having problems with changing things so don't worry about it.

Welcome,as you are in the infancy of your lessons, why dont you ask the pro to teach you to hit from the inside, thus drawing the ball.
I understand its not easy, but as you say you have barely started.

Welcome along. In answer to your question yes it's fairly common to take a few steps forward and then a couple of giant ones back. Its a fickle game but at least you're doing it the right way with lessons and so you won't have any bad habits inhibiting your game (those come later!!!). Be patient, stick with what your pro shows you and use the winter to get down the range and work on it so by the time next season starts yo can get out of the traps fast and impress your mates.

Welcome!

Good first post. What you say is normal. You are doing the right thing by having lessons with a pro. Carry on with that but make sure you spend time getting fundamentals right, like stance, ball position, grip, alignment. Tbh, this should always be practised!

Consistency is one holy grail in golf and if you get 8 shots out of 10 going where you want, then you're pro level! Your improvement will take it's natural time and course, dependent on your teaching, ability, practice, etc.

Golf is about patience, getting good lessons, doing good practice and trying to lower expectations (lol!) so that you dont put too much pressure on yourself. :D

Welcome.
I only started playing 2 months ago & like you I had 6x lessons, only now am I beginning to figure what works for me & what doesn't.

You have done the right thing by getting lessons & being shown the right swing etc.

I have listened to advise given to me on here, watched umpteen video's on U-Tube, taken golf books on holiday to read & practiced for hours until my hands were blistered, but it is now starting to pay off.
Be patient, when you have a specific problem Google it or ask on here.(they are a good bunch)

You will find that as fast as you cure one problem, then another will rear it's head, I had a horrific slice with my driver which I have managed to cure (most of the time) I then had problems with awful iron shots (mainly topping the ball & lack of accuracy) that has mostly been cured now.
Next on my list is learning to use my wedges properly & putting practice.

Anyway, you sound really keen like me, & as long as you are keen to learn you will get better quickly.

Top Tip, making sure you practice between lessons is important but also practice the right things (ask the pro) don't just batter lots of balls.

Good Luck and remember to enjoy it.

Must try that myself!!

Lessons early on in your golfing career are a great investment. Getting the fundamentals right will give you the best chance for the future.

It is entirely natural for things to feel strange. As my pro says, "If it doesn't feel strange, it's not different. If it's not different, then you're not changing anything and you're not going to get better."

Hi to everyone whos replied so far, appreciated.

I was just concerned that that feeling that each swing feels different and inconsistent was just me. I guess it is still very early days....i just want to be able to hold my own next summer when me and the lads get away for a few golfing breaks.
