I need to organise a short Golf Trip for The Captain at our Golf Club, early October, and he mentioned playing Monifieth/ Downfield and another beginning with L Landsdowne maybe! I know it was not Ladybank.

Notice that the Heartlands Golfing pass may cater for our needs. There will only be a small party 3 playing off single figures.

Any thoughts of where we should play please?

The other alternative would be North Berwick/ Gullane area which is a bit closer from South Cumbria

That will be Blairgowrie Lansdowne.

Nice golf courses however instead of Downfield I'd pop across the Tay bridge and play Steve's beautiful home track of Scotscraig. In my opinion it's miles better than Downfield.

Would give Downfield a miss at that time of year ,it will be like a bog and have winter greens. Monifieths a decent track you could always try Panmure which is next to Monifieth and an Open Qualifying course and never gets played.
My place Scotscraig is always in good nick at that time of year.

We visited Downfield twice during our years going to Scotland. First time we went it was in horrible nick. End of May, admittedly they had had a lot of late snow up there but the greens were dire.
We gave them a chance and re-booked it the following year. It was crap again, by far and away the worst course we played as far as condition was concerned. Some good holes and a decent enough layout. But I wouldn't fancy it being my home course for a full seasons golf. I bet it looks lovely around July/August time.

I would play both Blairgowrie courses, Letham Grange, Monifieth, Panmure, Scotscraig, Montrose Medal, and head further into Fife before I played Downfield again.

Played all of those except Monifieth. Loved Blairgowrie Rosemount but didn't think much of the Landsowne course. Bit too "up and down" for me, and some of holes looked like they had just been added on to make up the number. Montrose Medal is lovely, Scotscraig one of my favourites, Panmure OK but a bit of a duff start and finish. Played Letham Grange for 3 years on the trot. Nice course but similar to many we get down here so we gave up on it in the end.

Downfields a good track in July/August but October its a bog with with winter greens, take it from me i know what i'm talking about as my mates are members there and its just up the road from me.

You could also look at this site Links with History it gives you Scotscraig,Crail,Ladybank and Lundin Links, they also do all the booking for you.

Played Monifieth 2 weeks back after a gap of 18 years and it was superb...also played Panmure last year which was good but a few weak holes and it is a heathland despite claims it's a links....as much a links as I'm a great chipper of the golf ball. A bit like Scotscraig turf wise actually.

Carnoustie do a great deal for the courses there, the Buddon is a great track in it's own right.
