Have you used a 1 iron?

I have 2, A Sounder SB IV and a Macgregor Tourney.
I hit the Mac last summer on our slightly uphill range into a club&half wind and nailed 3 on the bounce with a 2 yard penetrating draw. Lasered them at 220 and 5 yards apart. Felt like soft butter off the face needless to say I put it down before the bad un's turned up.
The sounder tho is smaller and thinner soled then the Mac.

Loving the look of your Tourney. My first set of clubs were split sole Macgregor Tourneys and I loved them too, until a set of Wilson Staffs elbowed them out of the way and took their place in my affections.

I have a rubbish Wilson 1 and a titleist dci iron. I'd love a mizuno h5 effort but have no room in the bag nor do I fancy paying 80 quid for a club I'd hardly hit.

Once other items are boxed off I will look for a good 2i driving iron.

It's my go to club for tee shots if I need to hit the fairway. Been using it more and more lately and very pleased with the results.
It's a modern Mizuno design so fairly easy to hit even though it's only 16 deg loft.

I can vouch for Rick's ability with his Mizzie! Callaway also do an X-Utility and I think Titleist do one too. I've been close to Rory when he used one (712U? before he went to Nike) from the Tee practicing with it for The Open. Then, on Wentworth West 13th, he hit an 9 iron over the trees to 5 ft!

I've used both 1 and 2 irons in the past - and up until recently used a TM 1-iron one to practice with. I used to use a TM300 2-iron for 'under the wind' shots on links courses and for a couple of Par 3s or Tee shots, but has been superceded by Rescues.

A mate had/has the same model as you have bought. I've tried it several times and it's not all that bad to hit. That and one of the Callaway equivalents (Big Bertha?) are the 'recognised most forgiving' ones! It's still a fugly (pigs ear) club!

I used a Lynx USA 1 iron back in the 70s when I was a teenager and before forgiveness was invented. Only ever managed two really good shots with it but they remain etched in my memory. As others have mentioned I never had the swing speed or the accuracy of strike to make the most of it. I think it was ego over common sense at the time.

I hit the assistant Pro at Reading 1 iron in about 1975, and my fingers are still numb. Thin out of the heel was not good.:(

I had a two iron throughout my junior days. In fact most juniors did as it was a cool club. Nice blade with no forgiveness.

Used to bash an ancient 2 iron for fun down the range, was a laugh but little else of worth.

I would guess an old 2 is like a modern 3? Or almost anyway...

2 iron?
1 iron? ok

but why not get yourself a Wilson ZERO iron (Remember John Daly had one about 8 years ago) If i had seen one I would have had one too.

Not sure if you can still buy them, i am about to google, give me 5mins

Here you go

Oh yes its a true ZERO, 12 degrees is 4 degrees less than the 1 iron standard of 16.

Fun club

thats great! :) did not know that even existed haha. I actually have a ping eye 2 1 iron I've just checked, not that it matters to me really! I'm due out at 10:27 tomorrow so I plan on hitting the range with it before and seeing if it will get a place in my bag 😄

My old man tees off with a 2 iron on driving holes. Refuses to use a driver, but I'm only ever 30 yards past him on a 260 drive. Oh and he plays off 12 and I play off 20. Safe and controlled

Used to use a Wilson 1200 TR mostly for tee shots but occasionally off the deck. That was before hybrids. Big face and cavity and actually not that hard to hit. But a bladed 1 iron, that is a different beast altogether..

The only pro I know that had a 1 iron made specially for him is Patrick Reed and that was for the US open and Open Championship. These days even the best ball strikers don't use a 1 iron and manufacturers don't even make them. I know quite a few pros still game a 2 iron with great effect. I carried a 2 iron for many years in my junior days and early 20's. The thing is now with lofts getting stronger a modern 3 iron is the same as an old 2 iron anyway.

I cannot hit a 2 iron consistency enough anymore so I don't use one. I know at least one member on here who carries a 2 iron and hits it's superbly, I also know he's a better balls striker than me.

Peter Finch and James Pickard use one irons.

Exactly why I said I (as in myself) only know of one Pro and I was taking about currently active and still successful tour pros.

Some people will hit them very well, but then some will carry one because they think it makes there dick look bigger standing on the 1st tee.

It should be remembered, that 1 irons have become largely extinct because there has been so much de lofting by companies claiming extra yards, this inevitably leads to it not being possible to stamp any club 1 iron when your 3 iron is stronger than the 2 iron your dad had

Used to have one when I first started playing. It was my main club to use off the tee before I started using a laminated mizuno 5 wood. Could only ever hit the 1 iron off the tee though, useless off the grass with it.

That's a bit sweeping. Not all modern irons have been delofted.
Sure the game improver irons have, but the modern bladed sets are still the same as they were 30 years ago.

All the main manufacturers make bladed sets that start with a 21 deg 3 iron
Ping S55, i25,i20 etc
Mizuno MP4, MP5, MP25
TM MB, CB, AP2
CALLAWAY Apex MB
NIKE Vapor
WILSON STAFF FG tour

You have perfectly proven my point

In the 1960s a 3 iron was 24 degrees and about 1.5 inches shorter than all the models you posted as examples as you doubtless felt that these are weak modern lofts.

So these 21 degree examples are actually 3 degrees stronger than the traditional loft which is to say they are 1 degree weaker than a traditional 2 iron and longer in length also.

Some 3 irons are now 19 degrees! which is both stronger and longer than the 20 degree 2 iron my dad learned to play golf with.

There is a reason why gap wedges exist, they never used to (Were not needed) NOT all that long ago a PW was 52 degrees you can now buy OEM clubs with the PW stamped club with a loft as low as 43 degrees!

Its a sweeping statement as is it hardly a secret this has happened
