I noticed our joint account wasn't too healthy the other day so went over our statement to check things for the last two months. Then went back 12 months then 24 months. Most things are the same but our (my, coz I do it) spending in the supermarkets has shot up by £200. Surely things haven't gone up that much have they? :mmm:

Buying stuff in advance of Christmas?

If you are buying the same stuff each week , then there may have been a bit of an increase, but I suspect there are some extras in there

No surprise to me. Things have gone up. Supermarket basics that used to cost one pound something now cost two pounds something.

Lady Doon has just bought a new car, slightly higher spec than the last one she bought 8 years ago.
Paid the same price.
Saving tip. the best time to buy a new car is the last few days of November.

Food and service costs have increased [despite Brexit]

£200 a year? Sounds about right to me. You only have to look at items like bread (probably around £1.40 a loaf?), coffee, tea, sugar, milk - everyday items do seem to be creeping up. Bought some sour cream last night and it's never been more than a £1 before, £1.10.

Well our weekly all in shop for the 4 of us used to be around £120 a week, last weeks was £155 and we went over it double checking everything. We do online delivery so it's pretty much the same items.

Imo prices really have gone up.

I keep a close check on our grocery spend and it is about £10 per month extra compared to last year.

A £200 a month increase?!?

And another showing a 25% increase?!?

Without a doubt some things have gone up more than the 3% headline rate but some things haven't. Maybe I'm missing something but no way has our bills gone up by 25%, or more.

There definitely have bee quite a few things that have gone noticeably uo eg most dairy products, according a programme I watched last week a lot of that is down to increased demand. Wine and other booze would have gone up with the increase in Duty in March.

We (2 adults) pay £400 a month into the ‘shopping’ account and this hasn’t changed for over 10 years. We make a list and only buy those items, menu planned each week as well. Still make enough to freeze as well

HID tends to make a lot of homemade soups, stews, pasta sauces etc and freezes them. These tend to relatively cheap to make and last so very cost effective

If you've been paying £400 into your shopping account for the last 10 years and still are, then one of you has been syphoning off some of it for a while and expect an increase very soon.

£400 a month for 2 people is not unreasonable. However lots of anomalies. I have a work colleague who says she only spends £50 a week for the 2 of them but east out 4 times a week, lol like that's free. Do you include takeaways or alcohol as well and what about toiletries, washing stuff and any other non food items in the cost or do you shop elsewhere and like Boots and they need to be added against someone getting it all in say Tesco.

Really difficult to do a like for like against food shopping as some people get everything in 1 place and some shop around and some eat out or do takeaways hence the differences in cost and also on increasing costs.

Don’t do takeaways, and the weekly shop is the only one we do, no top ups. This shop includes booze, but don’t drink more than a bottle of wine and couple of beers/cider on weekends. When we have an excess of cash left at the end of a month, we top up the£ freezer at a food festival or farmers market
