I played today in the final of the Lancashire interclub final at Rochdale, my partner and I followed the signs for the 6th tee, came a tee bed and played the hole, when we got to the next tee we noticed it was for hole 12. We had played the wrong hole!

The clues were there, the tee bed was clearly marked 11, the image of the hole on my GPS was nothing like the hole we were playing. At least we didn't tee off on the following hole so weren't disqualified but we still had a 2 shot penalty, which ended up costing my partners team 2nd place.

Ive done exactly the same at Dawlish Warren in Devon. Went to play what we thought was the 7th, after following the sign, only to be waved at by the members we had just accidentally cut in front of, and shown the correct tee, thirty yards to the left of where we were (the 15th it turns out)

We did the same at Princes - no idea of the hole though (it was about 1997 or 8)

A Pro mate and his FC played a Pro comp at Laleham and went from 10th green to 16th tee - easily done as it's right beside the green while the 11th tee is about 150 yards away!

Like several golf clubs where this can happen, there's a sign pointing to the way to the correct tee. But also like most of them, the sign is redundant as if you have got to the point where the sign is, you know the bleedin' way!

2nd hole at high Bentham. Played the 1st then played the 18th. Don't know why but was on autopilot. Realised when we putted out and the golfers on the patio looked at us as if to say bloody hell that was a quick round! Exit sharp left :D

7th & 11th (I think) at Royal Wimbledon. Both play over the brow of a hill, we realised when we walked down and found we'd both knocked it to within a PW on a par 5 (that was in the days before forum distances so we did recognise the problem :D).

It does raise an interesting point though and are clubs actually doing enough to make sure green fees and visitors are treated properly and find it easy to move around. I have to be honest and say the signage at our place does leave a little to be desired in places

I was a caddie at a Pro Am at Calcot Park years ago. The Pro was Liam Higgins, and on one of the par threes he teed up with the group ahead still on the green. One practice swish, and he then smacked the ball ten feet from the pin on the wrong hole. It happened so quickly we couldn't stop him. Took four and missed top spot by a shot. Those were the days when Pro's played quickly.

Heaton Park - 16th hole is a 224 yard par 3. I got to the tee, looked out, saw a green, took my wood and ripped one to about 6ft. Then the group who'd just let us through said "that's the 18th green". Turns out the green is a blind one, over a hill and the only thing pointing out the green location is a small sign. Gutted.

Did it at Ardee playing the 17th thinking it was the 12th. The society tee box didn't have markers stating the hole number but it seemed logical so didn't think to check. That was until a 4 ball of members came down and shouted at us. One of the members was actually pretty irritate. Calmed down when we explained what had happened and pointed us in the right direction. Was a stableford comp and even without the 2 shot penalty I would have dinged the next hole anyway. Completely ruined my round though because I couldn't get it out of my head.

Then again, is it really a surprise I got lost ;).
