At the highest tour level probably yes. On the courses that the majority of amateur golfers play then I doubt there has been many changes made to make those courses harder as they were becoming too easy.

Modern technology can help to mask the effect of a slightly off centre hit, it can do nothing for a terrible swing.
I would say it's not off centre hits that hurt high handicappers, it's massive slices, duffs, losing balls etc. which will happen with whatever equipment you use.
However, if you have a good swing but miss the sweetspot from time to time by a small margin, modern technology helps compensate for that.
It might well help duffers to hit the ball further, probably not in the right direction though.

Easier to do what though? Shoot a low score, or hit some shots that made the ball go in the air?
Also, someone having their first round of golf isn't really the right comparator, we're talking about average handicaps so people that have played a fair bit.

I don't disagree with that. Just not convinced the correlation is better scores. It was probably harder to lose a ball with the first set of clubs.
i lost more with the wooden driver TBH

Because statistics can be made to convey a point.
How comparable at the two populations? Are you comparing like for like? Do you need to do weighting to make them comparable?
What are the sample sizes and how are they distributed?
If you know about ANOVAs then you know the mean is a pretty weak stat base an argument on.
So why has the mean not changed?
