Had this discussion with HimID the other day. I'm not interested in my net score only my gross. Anyone else thinks this is odd as he does.

Gross for me too. Its probably the wrong way for us mere mortals to think about it but for me getting below 90 is my goal at the moment.

Gross is the only score that is important. Nett is for those who want their score to make them sound better than they are

Interesting that you've all got low handicaps and think of gross. Have you always only been interested in gross?

Gross for me, however as I'm sure everyone is when playing match play comps i'm always aware of when my opponent or myself have a shot and base my hole strategy on that.

When I started playing that is all I knew. Points and Nett scores were unknown to me for the first 8 years of my golfing life so I just used to try and shoot as low as I could and it is still al I care about.

Cheers. All I'm interested in is seeing my score come down. Still high but I'm already getting round in a lot less shots than when I was first made to do a handicap card. Oh, and I hate stableford and can't see why anyone suggests it is good for a beginner!

Gross for me, never work out my net score during a round... It just appears on the list of scores at the end of the comp. having said that when I started out I didn't really bother with gross or net as I didn't play any comps, played a kind of stableford where I would give myself 1 point for double bogey, 2 for bogey, 3 for par etc. the really high scores on a few holes were too depressing to think of gross scores!

I played with a couple of guys off higher h/cs in summer and had this exact conversation.

If you focus on net, you're subconsciously saying to yourself that it's ok to make worse than par and you'll settle for that. Focus on gross, and you'll always be disappointed if you don't make par.

No idea if it makes any difference but for me, it has to be gross.

Ok, so during my post I see you posted that you hate stableford... What classes as a good beginner?

I keep getting told stableford is good as you can just pick up if you have a bad hole. Personally I don't feel as if I've played a round of golf if I have to pick up on a hole. Would rather carry on even if I have a high score. Possibly me being odd as none of the other ladies I've spoken to can see why I don't like it.

I've parred a few of the holes on our course now and even had one birdie - just not in the same round! - and have found myself having to make the point that it's been a proper par and not handicap one when I've told people. Perhaps the norm for most is to think of nets due to comps:confused:

I totally agree... No picking up at all... unless things get really bad!! So when I was a beginner and was practicing I finished every hole whether I could score points or not, but I didn't worry too much about the gross... I would count the points up as I found this to be better reading than thinking "would have been a great score except for hole x, y and z". So usually had a "stableford" type score and then an "17 over for 14 holes"... Just made me feel more positive..

Stableford is good as it gives you 18 chances, a lot of golfers who play medals and have a couple of bad holes lose interest and give up trying. A Stableford prevents that.
