Blew it on the last hole in Dubai.

You have to admire his honesty though. Dropped his ball from a couple of inches above the ground. The ball hit the edge of his marker which then flipped over. He called the ref who imposed a one shot penalty!

Big up to him for abiding by the rules. May turn out the competition will be remembered more for Poults honesty as to Karlsson winning.

I am sure we will see this incident in rule books of the future as an example of that rule.

However I prefer to see it as an example of how true sportsmen behave.

Football would do well to take example from the sportsmen of Golf..

This'll be the same Poulter who managed to throw his ball past his caddie and into a water hazard in the States a few years back. If one of his backroom guys hadn't gone into the water and found it, he's have been penalised.

He needs to concentrate all the time on the course, not switch off and hit the self destruct button.

But there is a big difference, football is soley reliant on the 3 officials to decide at all times whether the rules have been broken, not the players. When the rules have been broken the appropriate decision is awarded. The players push the bounderies of the game as close as possible but, ultimately it is the referee who gives every decision - golf is quite a different game!

Footballers play under a totally different set of moral standards, it's fantastic game and I loved playing it and now love watching it but I never expect to see player saying to the referee "don't give me that goal ref, I was a yard offside" BUT - I would expect a golfer to do a "Poulter" any time it happened

Honesty yes , but we all know that a tv camera somewhere would have spotted it and if he hadnt owned up he'd have got slaughtered. I admire Poults grit and self belief but I certainly dont feel sorry for him one bit.

I never saw the incident, even though I was watching it at the golf club. I'm now quite happy that I use a marker with a little stem on the bottom, that way it won't move if anything hits it. I hope!

I saw the interview with Poulter afterwards and you could tell how much he was hurting inside but he was pretty resigned to it to the camera at least. A shame that it had to happen and spoil a great climax to a good weeks golf. Good the see Karlsson back though after all his problems

I don't use one of those markers with the stem on because I was always worried about moving the ball removing it. I didn't realise at the time that it isn't a penalty.

Not a penalty if you move the ball, but apparently it is if you move the marker :D :D :D :D

I must admit up to last year i wasnt a big fan of Poults.....He always came accross cocky and arrogant to me....More the fool me for judging a book by its cover as since then i have watched him in various situations and have had the pleasure of watching various long interviews with him and to be honest i have grown to really admire and look up to him.......I was a big fan of Paddy but its a toss now between him and poults....

His manner with kids which i really admire him for is second to none....And what happened to him today was nothing short of cruel.....His gamesmanship is pristine.....

The rule is a rule fair enough but i think that it should be re-thought.....

Give the situation that if a players ball strikes another players ball on the green then that ball can be replaced without penalty as close as possible to the original location....

Why couldnt this have been done in poulters situation today?
It was only a matter of getting the technology out that they use to give you a line to the hole on the green and use it to find out the exact location of poulters marker

Got to agree Kid. I think Poulter has had his fair share of critics and has rubbed people up the wrong way with his cocky attitude. However this year his golf has shown a huge improvement and he's had a great season both in Europe and in the US and he has come across as a much more likeable guy too.

He does shedloads of charity work both for junior golfers with his Foundation but also for things like Dreamflight. He's a decent guy who has really gone up in my estimation even before this incident

Nothing but respect to the bloke and my heart goes out to him. I do have total admiration for the guy but its got to be said it was a very very poor wedge shot that set about the unfortunate sequence of events.

If I feel sorry for anyone its Karlsson.
Victory was his by virtue of performance, which in the event was superior to that of the field; any assertion that Poulter lost to Karlsson by fault of rule threatens to deminish his victory.
