Gortex as with other high end products will always only be as good as how well they are looked after

Had Gortex for waterproofs in the RAF and they worked very well - washed and then tumble dried

Have three lots of GG jackets and two pairs of trousers - wash with liquid that is specific for waterproofing and then tumble dry the garmets and even iron them

Still work well

The thing to remember is that Gore-Tex, whilst good is a brand leader and so people think it is the best, and only, option.
There are in fact plenty of alternatives to Gore-Tex that can give just as much weather protection at a fraction of the cost. I've had a Sunice Goretex and if I'm being honest I've not been overly impressed with it's efficiency. However, I've now done the Nikwax and Tumble Dry again and will test it out once more in the winter.

That is, imo, a commercial decision by the stockists - in order to maximise profit from the limited but, generally, well-heeled set of customers. Those, such as locals, after 'better' vfm deals are likely to obtain their kit through the likes of mail-order/internet outlets imo!

I have a pair of GG trousers that I bought January last year, been worn max 10 times since. Wore them in a comp last month that lasted for 3 holes before the course closed. It was raining hard, but we didn't even finish 3 holes..... and my lower half was soaked through to the skin, may as well have played without them. I contacted GG just before lockdown, was told

This is the second GG item I have bought, that has failed to keep me anywhere close to 100% dry. The trousers are immaculate condition, no threads or punctures, and really not sure why the should need re-activating after 10 wears. Maybe I'm just unlucky, but I have yet to find a set of goretex waterproofs that holds up to the 100% dry guarantee that they all market themselves on.

Not what they used to be. In my opinion moving the manufacture to China for such a premium product may be the cause.
GG used to be absolutely bullet proof, I now know plenty people who have had to send them back.

What will you do when their special washing liquid runs out?

Never seen anything double the price of GG. Plenty cheaper such as my Goretex Adidas half zip jacket (£60 brand new off ebay) that is perfect.

Graingers?

The Kjus stuff is good quality. Wedge junior has a few items supplied by the Uni team kit at discount prices. Brora had some lovely Kjus jackets but even on sale they were steep.

The important thing is to never wash them in any sort of detergent based washing powder or liquid as it washes out any existing waterproofing layer in the outer fabric.

The makers of Nikwax also produce Tech wash.

I just use soap flakes.

For those whose Galvin Greens failed, did you follow the washing instructions - NO FABRIC SOFTNERS.

This is a no, no totally destroys the goretex

Absolutely, never use softener or biological washing powder.

I know people whose GG has leaked badly having never washed it.
