golfshot legality

The use of any form of electronic device to measure distance. Be it on a phone or a stand alone device or any such device in contrary to the rules of golf. Any of the devices on the market can only be used for a stipulated round, if there is a local rule stating they can be used.

So if there is no local rule, even if you have a Skycaddie or the like. They are banned.

this whole compass crap winds me up. On the course do we need to know what is north/south/east/west? Do we bollox, only whether the wind is with/against/left/right and I am damn sure I dont need a compass to work that out!!! Or maybe I need it to find the next tee along with a map and some basic orienteering skills, grid to mag add etc etc

Would be interesting to know when the compass was added to the rules, was it in 1863 or something?

G1BB0 you would need a map to get to the next tee's on are course. When I have played on my own, I have gone to the nearest one. Only to find I should have gone 50yrds in the other direction.

Well at least the SGU have some reasonable guidelines in place. They strongly recommend that smart phones are not used as a DMD.

See here for details.

I think the compass thing is just a handy get out clause. As has been mentioned when this topic come up, most stroke savers have north marked on them yet are accepted as "traditional". I would not be in the least bit surprised if Skycaddie, Garmin etc have a part to play in this. Imagine if you could use a £20 app to do the same as a £300 GPS. How many GPS systems would be bought? I mean Golfshot isn't just simple Front/middle/back. You can check every aspect of whats ahead. An excellent little app.

Really handy chart there, thanks

Can I ask if its the muti-function variety (mobile) with a compass not requiring internet but you only use it for email, sms text or calls is it against the local rule (if one exists) i.e Do you have to engage the DMD feature for it to break the local rule or would using these other functions break it too?

Our club ruled that all DMD phone apps are illegal in competition....

Competitions
Following guidance received from the EGU, it was agreed that Distance
Measuring Devices available on mobile phones would not be permitted
within the local rule adopted permitting the use of DMD’s in competitions.

They can be used at any other time.

it is only when you use a device as a DMD that it becomes subject to the DMD device rules.

otherwise it's the use of the feature or application eg compass that creates a rule breach (14-3b) not it's existance. Put another way, you can have a compass in your bag without breaking the rules - but you can't use it.

There is nothing against the rules to use a phone to text, email make a call, consult the rules app, or even look at a list of club yardages made before the round.

As Duncan says it would be against the rule to use the compass app but the main issue is if using the phone as a DMD. Actually using the phone on the course is not against the rules.

I don't think anyone can with any real authority - doesn't make much sense to me.
I believe the R&A are looking at this Rule with a view to possibly ammending it.

On a cloudless day, wind blowing a gale from the East and you're playing on a tree lined course so all you can see is foliage - I can see why you would want to know which way is East/West. But only if your shot gets above the trees......

Compass on course would be really useful, knowing as we do that the ball on a typical 200yrd carry will be drawn to magnetic north by about 1.8 degrees (from its original point of rest) which after 200 yrds of flight gives a 38 foot varience in its landing position. Obviously enviromental conditions come into play which add/lessen this effect but you get the point

Ban em and burn em!

Hey Brendy when we playing Ballyliffin again. I now have a GPS and the lazer so I'll be able to find out exactly how far from the fairway I hooked my drive and confirm that you did infact hit a 350 yard drive and that smange can put a 3W 200 yards with a 30yard carry ;)

Ohhh, about a years time! :D Courses like Ballyliffin certainly massage the ego, imagine Smange had hit that round his own place, 30 yard carry, that might make the ladies tees! :D
