Golf Random Irritations

As I always say - a golf club seems to have 400 plus greenkeepers , a couple hundred GM’s and also bar staff etc etc
Yep. Every club seems to be full of experts on agronomy, hospitality, retail, finance, law, marketing, event management and (especially) handicaps. Chock-a-block with experts until you ask for people to join the committee and put some of their expertise to good use - then they all disappear like cockroaches when the light is turned on!

Yep - we had a “comp and IG” expert who kept telling us what we were doing wrong

So asked him to join our comp committee

Didn’t have a clue 😂

Golf Loudspeakers....Smart ones or otherwise.

Just reading the Mileseey review and my over-riding thought is simply.....why?

If you want to listen to music whilst out on the course, do it privately with a pair of earphones....don't subject the rest of us to your musical tastes when all we really want to hear is the sound of wind rustling through fields of barley, the far off twittering of a Skylark or the bark of a fox, the sound of horses hooves clattering over bridleways, the soft splash of fish jumping in the lakes (or more likely diving Cormorants trying to make a meal of said fish!!!).

If there is no other product deserving of a well struck 4 iron it is surely must be the on course loudspeaker?

I’m surprised you didn’t just take over the Green Keeping, you seem to have expertise beyond anyone else in any discipline based on your litany of posts explaining how people do things wrong and you’d know better.
I've offered. I won't sit back and just mouth off, I'll put myself forward. This doesn't work at my place. They don't want someone with ideas. I don't have the expertise, far from it, but I'd certainly stir things up with the GK and would look forward to them explining to me why they couldn't do anything suggested, as, form what I hear, all they come back with is cost cost cost. The biggest cost is the manual labour! How much our head GK is on for mowing grass is outragous.

Just an update for you with facts:

We get a greenkeepers report every month, the full schedule of works for the winter was published in Nov.

Schedule showed 4 Tee Boxes to be levelled and re-turfed, amongst other jobs.

Last week we got the latest update, below I have copy and pasted part of it:

Our winter workplan has hit a slight snagging problem at the moment, as the turf required to complete our projects is proving extremely difficult to get a hold of. Turf nurseries all around the country are currently too wet to get the machines on that lift the turf, so again we are at the mercy of the weather. Our workplan still remains on target however, and we are receiving regular updates from turf suppliers, so as soon as an opportunity arises we will be ready.”

So as you can read the realities hitting Greenkeepers is beyond their control.

Ours are superb and the improvements are continuing all the time.
Again, I can see why GK are pushing to lay turf as it gets the job done quick, but you don't need to do this. Turn the area over with a "Mantis", level it, chuck grass seed down in march. Three / four weeks later. Job done. Just have a temp tee until things are ready.

Speakers blasting out on the golf course ?

Only ever seen Vinnie Jones do it at Centurion

If they want to listen to music then go to a concert or put ear phones on

Your arrogance knows no bounds. It’s almost Trumpian.

I struggle to understand why your offers of help are not taken up 🤔

Perhaps it’s not ideas that are the issue, maybe it’s the way you come across as arrogant and all knowing that makes your ideas seem like it’s best treated how Tommy Robinson should be and simply ignored.

Maybe remove the bravado and know it all attitude and try having a conversation where you actually listen to the objections factually and you might understand the reasons behind it all. Also your GK will have spent years learning, gaining qualifications and experience to know exactly what he is on about and why he’s worth what he’s paid. Or should we return to an age where the help should simply be happy with what they get, put up, shut up and know their place 🙄

The things you post on here never cease to amaze me!

@nickjdavis have you come across anything like this on a course? I haven't but maybe it's something elsewhere in the country.
Thankfully not....it appears to be a by-product of US Golf Cart culture....round of golf, cooler full of chilled beer and a boombox on the back of the cart.

Inevitably though, if such products are being offered over here, folk will buy them and we will see (hear) them more often.

I’ll bite, I’ve got a bluetooth speaker I can link to my phone and listen to R5L on a saturday afternoon if up at PercyWood, course empty, football on, practising golf, no issues.
I’ve contemplated doing exactly this on the practice ground from next month. Small speak, podcast on and ensuring I’m well away from other people.
