Golf Random Irritations

I've heard several clubs moving to a "carry if you can" approach. Most people are easily capable of carrying. If they do, then it means the few people who genuinely need to use a buggy or a trolley can do so without severely impacting the course.
We have (or had) a rule that if the course was sufficiently wet, the only people who could use a trolley were those who had submitted a letter from their doctor stating they were unable to carry.

That seems to have gone by the wayside now.

Or maybe it's time to bring back caddies?
We are ‘carry if you can’ at the moment…even though the ground is generally dry and firm. I’m carrying. Plus some members are using mats for the first time…I’ve bought one but not yet used it. Want a bit of golf on my own having a go and adjusting before using in a round.

Each course must make provisions for players to be able to play the course - if people can’t carry then trolleys must only be banned due to health and safety issues and it’s the same with buggies

We have put ropes out to ensure trollies and buggies are directed in the safe areas to enable them to be used in most conditions

And there is of course the same moans about the ropes being away from the greens and their ball being on the other side etc

Normally tell them that they can carry if they want , and if we didn’t have the ropes out then trolleys would be banned

Whenever I see 'carry if you can' it usually results in only about 5% of people carrying. Most people see that as a green light to just use their trolley. 🤷🏻

As our Head Greenie says.....even 1 less trolley on the course is a win...

We go to Carry if you can from about mid-November u till April....many do, many can't.....
If I'm just doing 9 I'll probably carry but if I'm playing 18 then carrying will result in pain....lots of pain...

These wet winters are likely to be a problem for me.
I can carry ( 4 or 5 clubs) for nine holes.
I can’t walk 18, even with a trolley. Elderly Leg issues , so summer only competitive golf would be the case on many courses. Where I am, however, allow personal buggies where many would not.

Will always be the way despite some claims their club is better than others at it. As soon as go give a human being a choice such as “if you can” the majority will find reason they can’t because essentially it’s optional. However implement a rule of “ you will or you must unless medical proof provided by 100% of people unable to”, then you get pretty much full compliance. There’ll always be the odd one trying it on but instigating the 100% proof rule they soon get caught out.

Thankfully we have a good amount that go to carrying when the Green staff ask people to carry if they can - you can certainly tell on course as well
Likewise…we are fortunate to have such a membership 👍

Small, compact, lightweight carry bag for me with 11 clubs plus minimal rest of stuff and maybe 4 balls. Don’t mind jamming clubs in…no big deal for me. Will carry (or wear) a waterproof jacket but not bother with waterproof leggings. Will carry brolly if heavy or incessant rain forecast, otherwise won’t as I’m not bothered if I get a bit wet - cap and jacket suffice.

We had a similar rule around 35 years ago, so many players got letters from their doctors we abandoned the idea.

Second point - I reckon a lot of doctors would not supply such a letter these days.

My own surgery will not even do letters of support to obtain a Blue Badge.

In the future there’ll be trolleys that hover and everyone will be happy.
They’ll say can you believe in the olden days greenkeepers had to ask members to carry all their clubs in bags on their backs.

I wouldn’t be happy if I were told that sorry the doctor can’t see you, he’s too busy examining people and/or writing letters for people who don’t want to or can’t carry their golf bags.

If people haven’t got a pre diagnosed and known to be current condition, just having a letter without examination is a waste of everyone’s time anyway.

I agree with you sentiment

At the time I got my letter the surgery apologised if they had to give you an appointment after 10.30, my how things have changed. Probably 6 or 7 doctors in the surgery back then, these days lucky if there are 2 or 3.
