Golf Random Irritations

More courses within 30 miles of your front door than most of the uk😁 Must be able to find something.
Been having a deeper dive tonight. You’d think it’d be easy as there are so many courses within 30-40 mins of home however Hampshire all but one (which isn’t that great a venue) is pairs, seniors or ladies only. Surrey is basically the same with the exception of the Surrey tour events but they’re overpriced for what they’re offering. However the Berkshire suggestion has come up trumps some nice courses offering really good rates for both 18 & 36 hole events so will look at my work schedule and hopefully plan 3 or 4 in over the summer months.

Strange how regional these Open formats are.

Around here most clubs have a Men’s Infuvidual Open, quite a few clubs have a scratch 36 Men’s Open in addition. They all have the usual 4BB, mixed, seniors juniors etc. as well.

There seems to be an increase in mixed pairs as well in an odd format of the men playing a betterball and the women playing one as well and the two scores aggregated, sort of playing together and separately at the same time.

Our mixed Open is the same format, Best Man + Best Lady each hole in Stableford format for 2 Men and 2 Lady Teams of 4.

I would disagree regarding "virtually all", but I hear what your saying. I don't enter any of those. Annoyingly, one of my favorites courses has one.

There's clearly plenty of regional disparity as your NW colleague pointed out. 😉😁

I couldn't find a single one in my area, but there's plenty further north.

Just a friendly game but still... PP scores 36 points despite losing 5 balls!! o_O
(of course my own measly 25pt score while not losing a single orb didn't influence my irritation )

I genuinely can't remember the last time I lost a ball. Must have used the same ball for my last 7 or 8 rounds now at least. Now that it's muddy the ball just hits the ground and stops dead so it doesn't roll into any danger!

Playing with another couple in a winter comp stableford round...with them but not against them. He (of the other pair and a nice enough bloke Ive known and played with for years) continually telling us (my lady playing partner mostly) to hurry up...as he and his partner disappeared off down the fairway with their power trolleys while both of us were picking up our carry bags (as requested by the club) and chased after them - we were not being slow.

And on a later hole as my partner hunted for her tee after driving off he told her to just leave it, if she was that worried about losing a tee he'd give her some - then a couple of minutes later he came across to her with his hand out holding a couple of tees...say.."here - you can have these - I've plenty"

I very politely to him to F-off.

What was up with him? If he had somewhere else to be then he shouldn't have bothered turning up. 😂

For the last few weeks we’ve had a new rule that trolleys are only allowed on the footpaths which run up one side of the holes.

Sounds like a good idea in theory but it’s a total PITA particularly if your ball is on the other side of the fairways. You either need to guess the yardage from 40 yards away, or take multiple clubs over with you. Either way, you are faced with extra walking, slowing everything down.

Some folk have been ignoring the rule, leading to threats from the club that trolleys will be banned if this persists.

All of which would be ok if the course was wet , but it’s actually in the best condition it has been for years.

Like quite a few others, I’ve started carrying to speed things up, but my back is complaining.

It feels like it’s just a matter of time before trolleys are totally banned, which will be a nightmare, as well as being totally unjustified given the prevailing course conditions.

I've heard several clubs moving to a "carry if you can" approach. Most people are easily capable of carrying. If they do, then it means the few people who genuinely need to use a buggy or a trolley can do so without severely impacting the course.

Or maybe it's time to bring back caddies?
